The Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve is a 1,225-acre natural area near Grayslake, IL. Rollins Savanna has been restored to a very high quality natural area through partnerships with LCFPD, Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) and many federal and state conservation agencies.

Rollins Savanna is a good example of a water quality improvement project that the DRWW may work with stakeholders to implement. The project highlights a successful partnership between the LCFPD and LCDOT, who worked together to improve habitat and water quality while providing needed stormwater detention and compensatory floodplain storage for LCDOT improvements along adjacent Rollins Road and Washington Street.

The Rollins Savanna project also provided a rare opportunity to restore approximately two square miles of high quality prairie, oak savanna, and wetland habitat in an otherwise highly altered and extremely threatened region of northeastern Illinois. While the primary purpose of this project was to restore wetland and associated upland habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, a secondary purpose of this project was to reduce storm water run-off and improve downstream water quality. A five-mile hiking/biking trail through the site facilitates wildlife viewing and conservation educational opportunities.
