I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Fox Lake Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, who was killed in the line of duty Sept. 1 and to the Fox Lake Police Department. Thank you to all the men and women who are working diligently to apprehend the suspects and protect our community.
Immediately following the initial response of the events Sept. 1, a massive search effort was conducted in an effort to apprehend the three suspects. The primary search area consisted of an approximately two-square-mile area. In addition to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Fox Lake Police Department, the search included numerous local law enforcement officers from northern Illinois, Illinois State Police, and federal agencies. The search also involved multiple local and federal SWAT Teams, 48 canine units, and six air support units. The search lasted approximately 14 hours. As of just after 10 p.m., the perimeter has been released, and the scene has been turned over to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force (LCMCTF). LCMCTF will be the lead agency conducting this investigation.
The focus has shifted from the massive search for the
suspects to a criminal investigation which includes
canvasing/searching the area and following up on leads. Officials are
continuing to process the crime scene and collect evidence, including
collecting and reviewing local video systems, and interviewing people. Law
enforcement continues to actively maintain "saturation patrols" in the Fox Lake area.
Agencies involved in this effort include the Major Crimes
Task Force, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, FBI, ATF, U.S.
Marshall’s Office, and some other local jurisdictions.
As a result of community concerns, the following area schools are closed today. Grant Community High School District 124 Fox Lake Grade School District 114 Gavin School District 37 Gavin Central School Gavin South School Big Hollow School District 38 Saint Bede Catholic School
Officials stress that many cases are greatly assisted from
tips from the public. All tips and leads from the community should be directed
to the Fox Lake Police Department at 847-587-3100.
