Inquiring Minds: Police Cars Following Ambulances
Its not as action packed as John McClane following an ambulance in Die Hard with a Vengeance
Reader J.M. sent us this great question:
“I live along Ridge Avenue, which is a direct link to Evanston Hospital. Every now and then (and often enough for me to question), the ambulance is followed by a police car. My question is: Why?”
Sgt. Daniel Keeler has the answer:
“There are a number of possible reasons for an EPD vehicle to follow an ambulance to the hospital. One of the most frequent occurrences is for a person who is experiencing a mental crisis and is being taken to the hospital for an evaluation. Normally, an EPD member will ride in the ambulance with the patient and the paramedics, while another member will follow to provide additional assistance if needed and to give the member in the ambulance a ride back to their car.
Another common occurrence is an arrestee who requires medical attention. The vast majority of the time it is for more routine medical care, nothing too serious. The person is in EPD custody, so a member will ride with the paramedics, and another will follow in case assistance is needed and to provide a ride back for the arrestee and the officer who rode in the ambulance.
Also, there are times when the victim of a crime may need medical attention, and an EPD member will go with it and another will follow in order to provide security to the victim.”
