Thrive with Pride Cafe: Parkinson’s Disease & the LGBT+ Community: Research for a Cure

The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease for the 6 million people worldwide living with Parkinson’s. Maddie Kutler (they/them) at MJFF is part of a team increasing diversity and inclusivity in research initiatives such as the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), a study to better understand how the disease starts and changes over time. Karen Williams (she/her) and Dr. Danielle Larson (she/her) are aiding in these efforts on the PPMI team at Northwestern University.

Join Maddie, Karen, and Dr. Larson at our May Thrive with Pride event, where they will discuss what Parkinson’s disease is, how it impacts the LGBT+ population, and why research participation is so important.

Science with Seniors

Each month, graduate students from Northwestern University visit the Levy Senior Center to discuss different science topics. This month, they will be discussing the topics of Live Animal Brain Imaging on Thurs., May 25 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Presenters will be joining in-person. Registration is required by calling the Levy front desk at 847-448-8250.

Free Fitness Class

The Levy Senior Center Fitness Instructor, Sandy, is offering a free blend fitness sample class that combines her Power-Up class and her Stretch & Restore Yoga class on Tues., May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Levy Senior Center. Super Senior Day, June 9

Come to the Levy Senior Center on Fri., June 9 for Super Senior Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to renew your driver's license or state ID, vehicle renewal stickers and vision testing. No road tests are given and they do not currently do the REAL ID.

Rules of the Road

As a part of Super Senior Day, the Secretary of State's Office is hosting a Rules of the Road classroom instruction taking place on Fri., June 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. This classroom instruction will review safe driving techniques and Illinois driving laws. Call the Levy front desk at 847-448-8250 to register.

Kick off the summer with Lynne Jordan & the Shivers

Lynne Jordan & The Shivers are back at Levy on Fri., June 9 at 5 p.m. for our first outdoor concert of the season. In a city abounding with classic blues and jazz voices, Lynne Jordan’s voice stands out as vocalist, bandleader, solo performer, and storyteller. Drawing on personal experiences, her stories are always poignant, often funny, and always accompanied by a song, touching on everything from civil rights to pop culture to sports. 

The free concert will be held outside the Levy Senior Center. Bring a lawn chair and an appetite and grab dinner from Cocina Azteca. No registration is required.

Vaccine Clinic

The Levy Senior Center has teamed up with Jewel Osco Pharmacy to host a vaccine clinic on Fri., June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You are able to choose from Covid Bivalent, Shingles, Pneumonia or Tetanus vaccines. Call the Levy front desk at 847-448-8250 to make an appointment.

Save the Date - Disco in the Park

Put on your boogie shoes and hustle on over to the Levy Senior Center on Fri., Aug. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a night you won’t forget. Take a walk down memory lane and enjoy the best of 70’s music from our local DJ.

Levy Café
