FAQ: What causes emergency sirens to sound?
The City's emergency sirens will automatically sound in the event that the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a Tornado Warning for Evanston. NWS issues Tornado Warnings based on the projected movement of a storm. In the event of a Tornado Warning, you should take cover.
Other emergencies: Sirens may also sound in the event of a pending emergency or disaster, such as an earthquake, extreme winds, damaging hail, a biological or chemical hazard, or in the event of an enemy attack on the U.S.
Monthly testing: Sirens are tested on the first Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. The City also utilizes the sirens to notify residents of parking restrictions in the event of a Snow Route Parking Ban or Snow Emergency.
COVID-19 Update
Cases: Evanston reported 202 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last seven days, compared to 254 for the week prior. The current seven-day moving average of daily confirmed cases is 28.86.
COVID-19 Community Risk Level: MEDIUM
Hospitalizations: View local COVID-19 hospitalizations.
To date, Evanston has had 14,319 total confirmed cases, and 149 residents have died of illness or complications related to COVID-19. View the City’s interactive COVID-19 dashboard (view on mobile).
Vaccinations: View the City’s vaccination data dashboard (view on mobile) for the latest Evanston-specific vaccination data from the IDPH.
FAQ: Can I report an at-home test result?
At this time, the City, County and State do not have a mechanism for reporting, verifying or tracking at-home COVID-19 test results. Community members who test positive or are exposed to COVID-19 should follow CDC protocols for quarantine and isolation.
For questions regarding these protocols, email the Evanston Health and Human Services Department at health@cityofevanston.org or call 847-448-4311. Additional updates will be shared following any changes to this process.
Getting an at-home test
At-home tests are available for free from the federal government, as well as for purchase at many local retailers.

Certified Lifesavers
Congratulations to the City's 2022 Lifeguard Academy graduates! So far, 23 new lifeguard recruits have completed 100 hours of training in medical aid, CPR, and water rescue to achieve United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) certification. Evanston lifeguards work closely with the Evanston Fire Department to keep lakefront visitors safe throughout the summer.
'Calm, efficient and professional'
"I just want to give kudos to the lifeguard staff who were working today. As I arrived with my children and a couple friends at Greenwood Street Beach, there was a young child who was collapsing. The lifeguard staff was incredibly quick to respond. They were calm, efficient and professional. My background is an ICU nurse and it is difficult for me to walk past this sort of an incident as it's in my nature to offer assistance, but your staff clearly had it under control. The lifeguards not attending to the child kept their eyes on the water and the swimmers. Thank you for the great training these lifeguards have received to respond the way they did." - Mary
