Statewide Fire Update

This report is published weekly during fire season and covers the fire situation on land protected by the Idaho Department of Lands, Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association (CPTPA), or the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association (SITPA), current fire statistics, the status of major fires and fire restrictions.

IDL Fire Suppression Expenses

As of Tuesday, August 3, 2026, IDL has spent a total of approximately $23.3 million on fire suppression activities. Approximately $6.5 million of that is reimbursable to IDL for assisting other agencies on their fires, leaving a total estimated net obligation to the General Fund of $16.8 million so far this year.

Status of Major Fires on IDL Protection

There are currently no major fires on land under IDL Protection.

IDL Incident Management Team Fires to Date

Ohio Fire

The Ohio Fire was an Idaho Department of Lands jurisdictional incident within the East Idaho Forest Protective District but was managed by the United States Wildland Fire Service (USWFS) under cooperative protection agreements. USWFS assumed initial management on July 18, with command transferring to a Type 3 Incident Management Team on July 20 and returning to the local unit on July 23. The fire burned 2,035 acres.

Greer Fire

The Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association (CPTPA) responded to the fire July 10. Management was transferred to the North Idaho Incident Management Team on July 12. On July 18 management was returned to the Timber Protection Association. The final acreage of the fire was 353 acres.

Gold Run Fire

The Cataldo Forest Protective District initiated attack of the fire on June 16. Management was transferred to the North Idaho Incident Management Team on June 17. On June 23 management was returned to the district The final acreage for the fire was 217 acres.

This GIS-enabled Statewide Fire Map uses data from the Integrated Reporting of Wildland-Fire Information (IRWIN) system. Unlike other online fire information webpages or databases, such as Inciweb, which may only report on incidents that threaten structures or cover large acreages, this fire map displays information about all reported wildfires in Idaho.

Fire Restrictions Currently in Place

Idaho has been divided into eight Fire Restriction Areas with zones established within. Each area corresponds with the fire dispatch area boundaries. Interagency coordination between fire management agencies within the areas is used to initiate restrictions. This helps provide consistency among the land management partners, while defining the restriction boundaries so they are easily distinguishable to the public.

The purpose of fire restrictions is to reduce the risk of human-caused fires during unusually high fire danger and/or burning conditions, and when other prevention efforts have been exhausted.

The following areas are in Stage 2 fire restrictions that include fire restrictions that include all lands managed by or are under the fire protection of Idaho Department of Lands, Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, or other tribal or federal agencies.

Coeur d'Alene Fire Restriction Area: North Zone

Stage 2 restrictions prohibit:

Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire (wood or gas fueled), or stove fire.
Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a designated recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
Operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails in accordance with existing travel management plans.

The following acts are prohibited from 1:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.:

Operating a chainsaw or other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine for felling, bucking, skidding, yarding, processing, road building and woodcutting during industrial operations or firewood gathering.
Blasting, welding, grinding or other activities that generate flame or flammable material.
Using an explosive.

A 1-hour patrol is required after the activities described above have ceased. For forest operations requiring an IDL-issued Certificate of Compliance, a 3-hour patrol is required. If the work is occurring under an IDL “Option 1” Certificate of Compliance, a 1-hour patrol is required.

The following areas are in Stage 1 fire restrictions that include all lands managed by or are under the fire protection of Idaho Department of Lands, Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, or other tribal or federal agencies.

Coeur d'Alene Fire Restriction Area: South Zone
Payette Fire Restriction Area: All Zones
Boise Fire Restriction Area: All Zones
South Idaho Fire Restriction Area: All Zones
Central Idaho Fire Restriction Area: All Zones
Eastern Idaho Fire Restriction Area: All Zones

Stage 1 restrictions prohibit:

Building, maintaining, attending to, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal grill or stove fire, except within a designated recreation site, and only within a fire structure provided by the administrative agency or landowner.
Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or designated recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
