Land management focus of recent 'Chat'
Bonner County Daily Bee, 5-17-24
Land management, mining laws and more were among the topics covered under a May 17 Commissioner Chat featuring Dave Brown from Idaho Department of Lands.
Commissioner Asia Williams, who hosts the weekly chats prior to the start of the Board of County Commissioners weekly business meetings, started off the chat asking Brown how the public could participate in IDL decisions. Meetings are open to the public and held at the IDL office and the public can reach out to be on the agendas if they have an issue they want addressed.
The chat continued on with a mix of questions from the public and from Williams. Brown discussed burn permits and talked about how Bonner County is one of the driest counties in Idaho and therefore struggles in the summer months with wildfires. He talked about the importance of knowing how to maintain fires and calling in bigger, out-of-control fires to 911. Brown noted the local University of Idaho Extension office has a lot of good-to-know information on fires and fire safety.

Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association C-PTPA
Clearwater Tribune, 5-15-24
The Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association, or C-PTPA, is an interagency cooperator with sole protection for about a million acres of forest land in North Idaho. The Chief Fire Warden for C-PTPA, Kane Steinbruecker, started on a fire crew for the Association in the late 1990s and took his current position in 2021.
History and mission
C-PTPA was organized in August of 1905 by large industrial timberland owners. At the time there was no such organization for wildland fire suppression, nor were there resources for firefighting.
In 1905 the Harlan Fire occurred. At the time, Theodore Fohl, who was to become the first Chief Fire Warden of the organization, had gone to Orofino to round up as many homesteaders, cruisers and people as he could to come and fight the Harlan Fire. He realized immediately that they weren’t going to have enough resources so he engaged the timber companies.

Forest turns classroom at "Women in the Woods'
Bonner County Daily Bee, 5-10-24
SANDPOINT — More than 40 women took to the trails of the Pine Street Woods Friday to participate in the Idaho Department of Lands’ annual Women in the Woods event.
With nine stations to glean knowledge from, women were able to learn about various outdoor topics from other women in those different industries. Topics such as insect identification, fire mitigation, wildlife habitat, tree identification, soil health, and more were discussed throughout the day.
At one station, women were able to learn about the different ways that insects can damage a tree as well as self defense mechanisms those trees use to fight bug infestations. That same station demonstrated various types of illnesses trees throughout Bonner County can get. The most commonly seen, the instructor said, is a malaria-like infection that spreads under the bark of the tree — making it difficult to catch.
