MMMM Donuts!
The donut shop many people are asking about is very close to opening. Hurts Donut Company in Plantation Walk received its certificate of occupancy from our Building Safety Department late last week, signaling that they passed all required inspections.
No opening date has been announced yet.
There are about 20 Hurts franchises across the country. They advertise "really freaking good donuts" and they "break all the rules." A better description is at WannaHurts.com.
The Plantation Hurts Donut Facebook page has been active for quite some time, with followers posting more than two years ago "when are you opening?"
The address is 350 N. University Drive, across the street from TacoCraft.

New Police Chief
We are excited to announce the confirmation of Deputy Chief Jeffrey J. Schlegel as the next Chief of Police. He will be officially sworn in on Dec. 5, following the retirement of Chief Harrison, who has served the City of Plantation with distinction for 42 years, including 16 years as a Chief.
Chief Schlegel brings more than two decades of service and leadership experience. He served in the United States Marine Corps and nearly every area of law enforcement. At Plantation PD, Chief Schlegel led initiatives that strengthened professionalism, training, and community relationships. His leadership philosophy centers on accountability, transparency, and service to others.
We all know Chief Harrison is irreplaceable; there will be no one like him. But part of his legacy is building a very deep bench in the Police Department. Chief Schlegel is Exhibit A of that. But I'm also excited with his initiative. He'll make the department his own.

Examining business tax receipts
Last night, the City Council has requested a clarification on our business tax receipt (BTR) requirements. Current code states that all professionals must register annually and have their own BTR. For example, an architectural firm must have a business tax receipt and so does every architect in that firm. Same with a nail salon and its licensed technicians.
Council members indicated that they have heard that other cities may not have such a requirement, and asked for a longer discussion.
We plan to hold this discussion at the City Council meeting on Nov. 19.
November happenings
November might be the most active month of the year in Plantation, so I thought I’d provide brief info on many events, starting with Thursday, Nov. 6:
Silver Linings: Solutions for Affordable Senior Living town hall will bring together experts to discuss various subjects impacting affordability for seniors.
It will start at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, at Plantation City Hall.

A community meeting on the School Board’s Redefining Our Schools initiative is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Dillard High School. The merger of Plantation High and Plantation Middle will be discussed along with the plans for Bair Middle, Westpine Middle, North Fork, Walker and Thurgood Marshal Elementary schools. The meeting will also be live-streamed via BeconTV.

A ribbon-cutting for a new business professional center will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Broward Presidential Center, 201 S. State Road 7. The site will be home for such endeavors as legal, insurance and accounting.
The addition is another step in the city's efforts to upgrade the State Road 7 corridor, contacting and incentivizing owners of vacant land to construct substantial improvements that attract high quality businesses, providing jobs and services and adding to the tax base.
The Gateway Advisory Board that discusses various matters affecting businesses along this corridor meets regularly. Go to Plantation.org for the schedule.

The first concert in our popular Rock the Park series kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at Pine Island Park. The bands performing are Foreigner Experience and Bad Inc., which will play songs by Foreigner and Bad Company.
To support local families facing hardship, Councilmember Denise Horland is leading a partnership with Plantation High School to collect non-perishable food items for Harvest Drive during the concert. Your generous support will help provide daily food assistance as well as a joyful and healthy Thanksgiving for food-insecure families in Broward County Public Schools. Drop-off bins will be available at the event entrance.

Meanwhile, Councilmember Andreu is leading the efforts to assist Jamaican communities devastated by Hurricane Melissa. You can help by dropping off needed items at the barrels placed at the Jim Ward Community Center and Volunteer Park.
Three of the five barrels are already filled and will soon be prepared to be flown to Jamaica.
