Golf simulation approved
The City Council approved Cypress Golf, an indoor golf simulation center, at 6920 Cypress Road. The facility, near Webby’s and Riverside Market, replaces the Dollar Tree that closed.
Cypress Golf will be about 2,300 square feet and have three bays for golfers, who can choose from a menu of popular courses.

It will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Reservations will be made via an online system.
Benjamin Mizrachi, who also opened the Savvy Suds laundromat, addressed questions asked by Council on April 9.

Mural at Jacaranda Club
We’re getting another mural, this time at Jacaranda Club, a rental community at 320 NW 87th Road. The Council approved the plan on April 9.
The 15 foot-by 26-foot mural will be on the east side of a building at Jacaranda Club. It will be fully visible within the community. Those traveling southbound on Pine Island Road will be able to catch a glimpse.
It is designed by Amauri Tarezan and was arranged by Robyn Vegas, Executive Director of Business for the Arts Broward. The artwork consists of lines and shapes, rather than of a specific image.
You can read the backup documentation here.

Crime Victims’ Rights week
Debbie Geller, Victims Advocate at Plantation Police Department, spoke in relation to April 6-12 being Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The word she often used was “kinship.”
“This year’s theme is a call to action to recognize that shared humanity should be at the center of supporting all survivors and victims of crime,” she said.

Royal Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday
It’s the race for the eggs: The city’s Royal Egg Hunt is set for 10 a.m. sharp at Pop Travers Field on April 19.
Children ages 3-10 will be divided into age groups and placed on separate fields.
Inflatables, arts and crafts, food sales and the Easter Bunny will be on hand. The event ends at 1 p.m., but the eggs will be long gone hours before.

‘The Armpit of Doom’ at Council meeting
Winners of the Plantation Park elocution contest led the Pledge of Allegiance at the April 9 City Council meeting – and we got a little bit more.
Taylor Meredith, a fifth-grader, read “The Armpit of Doom,” a popular poem by Kenn Nesbitt. FYI, elocution is the skill of clear and expressive speech.
The Armpit was smelly. The Armpit was hairy. The Armpit was truly disgusting and scary.
She read with expression and enthusiasm and the audience in the chambers was entertained.

School speed cameras delayed
The city has encountered several complications creating its school zone speed cameras, therefore the program likely will not be in place until the start of school in the fall.
Many cities have installed cameras near schools that activate a ticket for drivers going 11 mph or more over the speed limit. The Plantation City Council approved school zone speed cameras back in June 2024.
But permitting with Broward County and the Department of Transportation have delayed the process, Police Chief Howard Harrison told the City Council last week. He added that the plan is to activate all the cameras at the same time, to enhance the effectiveness of a citywide public information campaign.

‘Community Sewing’ for Earth Day
Council President Pro-Tem Denise Horland has helped organize an Earth Day “Community Sewing” Event held on Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22) from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Plantation Police Community Outreach Center at Broward Mall’s northwest entrance
The project is “Branching Out,” a large-scale public art tapestry mural celebrating Florida’s native flora and fauna, crafted from recycled fabrics.
Broward County Artist Innovation Grant awardee Magda Love, and South Plantation High School Magnet student Audrey Tessier are using discarded textiles to create this tapestry, which will build awareness around practices that threaten our fragile Florida ecosystem. The completed two-story tapestry will then be displayed in locations throughout Plantation and Broward County.
If you can thread a needle or use a sewing machine, and have a few hours to spare, come be part of this exciting community project, Horland says.
