Mayor Sortal's Plantation Update - February 14, 2023 |
|
Police Chief Howard Harrison and I met with Plantation clergy, as the City does annually. This Plantation Interfaith Association of Clergy meeting was held at Ramat Shalom Synagogue.
Our first updates, as always, focused on safety. Chief Harrison pointed out that he encourages officers to know details about the particular zone they work in. I, as usual, suggested everyone within earshot put the non-emergency number, 954-797-2100, into their phone and mark it “Plantation Police.”
The clergy group also discussed plans for the Plantation Chamber of Commerce’s 43rd annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast. This year it’s on Thursday, May 4, at the Jacaranda Country Club and costs $30. Go to PlantationChamber.org to register.
Rock & Brews is looking to hire 175 people for their new location in Plantation Walk at 341 N. University Dr Suite 1100. Visit them, if you are interested in a job.

La Bamba at 10169 West Sunrise Boulevard remodeled and expanded into the adjacent suite at 10175 W Sunrise Blvd. The expansion enlarged the previously undersized kitchen area and added more seating.

Borsalino opened a location in Plantation at 1045 South University Drive. It replaced the Aroa Craft Yogurt & Café next to LA Fitness.

American Heart Month
Councilmember Louis Reinstein presented a proclamation for American Heart Month to the Plantation resident Marc A. Marra. Along with his wife, Jessica Daley Marra, and through their organization Heart Warriors, LLC, they donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the City. Their 5-year-old daughter Charlotte has a severe congenital heart issue and has had three open heart surgeries to date.
|
This past weekend Councilmember Reinstein also hosted a free CPR and AED training for our residents together with HeartCharged and their founders, Bethany & Hannah Keime.
“Three minutes saves lives,” Reinstein noted.
To repeat what you already know: You can prevent heart disease by engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, managing stress, avoiding smoking and vaping, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol and getting quality sleep.

Black History Month
We acknowledged Black History Month with a proclamation.
The observance of Black History Month began in 1926, when Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and Minister Jesse Moorland sponsored the first national Negro History Week.
It was celebrated the second week in February, and later, in the 1960s, as part of the Civil Rights Movement, the observance evolved into Black History Month.

State Representative Daryl Campbell Visit
State Rep. Daryl Campbell visited City Hall recently, asking about Plantation’s legislative priorities and listening to what appropriations we seek during the upcoming session. We outlined our concerns with State legislation limiting the City’s ability to regulate short-term rentals and the need for affordable housing.
We appreciate Rep. Campbell’s sponsorship of a legislative appropriation request which would assist in funding the renovation and storm hardening of the City’s Regional Utilities Operations Center.

Service Coordination
City engineer Samira Shalan held a quarterly meeting with representatives from FPL, AT&T and Comcast in an effort to better coordinate their work efforts in the city.
Utility companies are continuously working on upgrading their infrastructure to increase reliability and provide a sustainable network during the hurricane season. The Engineering Department coordinates with them to address resident concerns during the construction phase.
One of FPL’s main projects includes the installation of concrete poles, but they must leave the adjacent wooden pole until all necessary utilities have transferred their equipment onto the new pole. Plantation is coordinating the effort of expediting such transfers within the city so that FPL can remove the old poles faster. As a result, there are fewer “double-pole” areas in the city. Efforts to clean up these areas are ongoing.

Vacation Rentals
You might have seen an item on our city platforms updating residents about more stringent rules for vacation rentals. If you haven’t, here is the link.
If you are disturbed by a nearby “party home,” call police while the activity is ongoing. Their number is 954-797-2100.
For questions on our ordinance changes, contact Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Department at 954-797-2225.
