Vacation Rental Ordinance Update
After workshops, public input and comparisons to other cities, Plantation adopted a tighter Vacation Rental Ordinance at the Jan. 25 City Council meeting.
Like every city in Florida, State law prohibits us from banning vacation rentals. All we can do is make the business rules as stringent as possible.
We know we have many responsible vacation rental owners, but the “party homes” are unfair to the neighbors and must be better policed.
The City now requires vacation rental owners/agents to:
-
Obtain a certificate of insurance to cover liability for injury or harm to occupants;
-
Obtain an annual inspection of each rental to ensure compliance with our safety standards;
-
To maintain a log of all guest records for a three-year period;
-
Obtain a separate rental registration for each vacation rental operated within the city.
Our new Planning and Zoning Licensing Clerk started this week to help ensure short-term rental properties are following the requirements.
We also want to address the major nuisances being caused by vacation rentals, so we:
-
Require an installation of a noise level detection device;
-
Have reduced the number of people permitted in a vacation rental;
-
Prohibit occupants and visitors from parking in front of adjacent properties without owners’ consent.
If you are disturbed by a nearby “party home,” call police while the activity is ongoing. Their number is 954-797-2100. For questions on our ordinance changes, contact Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Department at 954-797-2225.
