Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!
Hi Superior,
Are you looking for a way to serve your community? Are you a leader who wants a seat at the decision-making table? Do you find yourself frequently questioning Town Board decisions? Are you that “keyboard warrior” who frequently takes to social media to criticize your elected officials?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, this message is for you! This November, Superior voters will be electing three Trustees for 4-year terms. Maybe one of those positions could be filled by you?
To serve as a Trustee, you must be a citizen of the United States of America, be eighteen (18) years of age or older on the date of the election, be registered to vote, and have resided in Superior for at least the 12 months immediately prior to the date of the election. To obtain candidate affidavits and petitions, you can reach Town Clerk Lydia Yecke by phone at 303-499-3675 ext. 112 or email. Packets will be available for pick up on Aug. 6, and the deadline to make the ballot is Aug. 26. For more information, please check out the Town’s election website.
If you are interested in running for a Town Board seat but have questions about the job or the time commitment required, please attend one of our First Fridays to talk directly with our current Trustees. Serving your community as a Trustee is a rewarding and fulfilling job. It’s an honor to represent the community and I encourage everyone who is interested to step up, run for office, and make a difference in Superior!
Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Give geese space to keep everyone safe!
When you're recreating in Superior's beautiful parks and open spaces, you're likely to encounter geese.
Here are some tips to stay safe:
- It is normal for geese to get territorial and attempt to chase perceived danger away from nests and chicks.
- Geese can bite if you get too close or attempt to interact with them. They do not have teeth, but they can give a good pinch, enough to bruise.
- Feeding geese encourages them to approach people, sometimes aggressively. They eat grass and do not need human food.
- Once chicks leave a nest, it is no longer used until potentially next year, and you should be okay removing it.
- If a goose comes towards you, remain calm, do not kick or hit at it, back away slowly and maintain eye contact. If it flies at you, move at a 90-degree angle out of the way.

Reclamite Pavement Rejuvenation begins Aug. 6 in Rock Creek
On Aug. 6, the Town will begin a Reclamite Pavement Rejuvenation project, which will treat some of Superior's roads with a product to restore the pavement and extend the life of the roadways.
The Town will treat:
- Eldorado Drive from Indiana Street to Alma Lane, including the connecting streets;
- Clayton Circle; and
- Rock Creek Circle.
Construction will last approximately five days, with single-lane road closures during construction. Residents who live in the impacted area are asked to please turn their irrigation systems off when the work occurs. Impacted residents will receive a door hanger from the contractor prior to construction.
What is Reclamite Pavement Rejuvenation? And why do it?
Reclamite is sprayed onto the pavement surface and can extend the road's life five to seven years, reducing the need for costly roadway reconstruction. It is applied in one pass and has a 20-45 minute cure time, leaving no surface coating.
Following application, a light coating of sand screening is applied to prevent the roadway surface from being too slick and to dry up any remaining compound. The sand is swept up the day after application.
This project is part of the Town staff's continuous effort to find cost-effective opportunities to improve overall street maintenance and extend the useful life of Town roads. Reclamite has been used successfully in nearby cities, such as Lakewood and Boulder, for over a decade.

Rock Creek Parkway project progressing
Construction continues on the reconstruction and resurfacing of Rock Creek Parkway from McCaslin Boulevard to Indiana Street.
Crews have completed the project's first two phases, which included reconstructing Rock Creek Parkway from Wiggins Street to Indiana Street.
Next, crews will complete Phase 3, which includes reconstructing Rock Creek Parkway from Wiggins Street west to the pedestrian overpass and milling and overlaying the remainder of Rock Creek Parkway to McCaslin Boulevard.
In August, crews will also complete the median xeriscaping and restriping of Rock Creek Parkway from McCaslin to Coalton Road. This project stage will include two reduced-width lanes in each direction, a larger buffered bike lane to improve multi-mobility and pedestrian crossing enhancements.
Staff will continue to post updates in the Weekly Happenings email. You can learn more about the project on the Town's website.

Coal Creek Drive neighborhood invited to traffic-calming meeting
Superior's Transportation and Safety Committee is considering traffic-calming measures along Coal Creek Drive and 4th Avenue in Original Town due to resident concerns about traffic speeds, volume and cut-through traffic.
In doing so, the Town is collecting resident input in a neighborhood meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at Town Hall, 124 E. Coal Creek Drive.
Some of the topics to be discussed during the meeting include:
- Speed data and traffic counts on Coal Creek Drive
- History of traffic calming on Coal Creek Drive
- Potential improvements along Coal Creek Drive such as speed humps, bike lanes and other traffic calming measures
- Restricting 4th Avenue traffic (i.e. right-turn only onto Sycamore Street)
In-person attendance is encouraged, but the meeting will also be held virtually for those who cannot be there.

Downtown Superior defines parking regulations
Downtown Superior (DTS) includes 1,075 parking spaces. Peak parking demand showed a need for 1,061 spaces. This means parking in DTS may be tight during busy periods but is generally sufficient to meet the needs of the full build-out.
To help ensure parking is used efficiently and effectively, the Town has been working with developers and the Superior Town Center Metropolitan Districts to implement the DTS parking plan.
This plan includes parking restrictions for many public parking spaces along streets within DTS and the parking structures.
Visit the DTS parking webpage for a map summarizing parking restrictions in most areas. The Town will be contracting with a third-party parking management to implement and enforce this parking plan.

Let's keep Superior safe for all road users!
Superior is known for its great pedestrian and bicycle connectivity – let’s keep it safe for all road users! Here are safety tips to keep in mind as you travel our community on foot, by bike and in your vehicle.
As a driver, be aware of places where pedestrians and bicyclists commonly enter the street.
This includes intersections, mid-block crossings, trail connections, near schools/parks/pools, and residential areas. Use extra caution and slow down as you travel through these areas. Maintain focus. Don't be distracted by cell phones and other devices.
As a pedestrian or bicyclist, make eye contact with oncoming drivers before you step into a crosswalk.
Even if you have pressed the button and have the right-of-way, drivers do not always see you. Walk or wheel as quickly and safely as you can to the other side of the street, and do not look at your phone while you cross.

Recreate responsibly with the Keep It Clean Partnership!
Rain and melting snow pick up pollutants from our parks and trails and carry them into storm drains, which drain directly into local waterways untreated. These are the same waterways where we swim, fish, and play during the summer.
You can protect yourself and our waterways while recreating by picking up after your pets, packing out solid human waste and toilet paper, and using mineral sunscreen when recreating in the water.
When swimming in lakes and creeks, do not swim immediately after a rainstorm, and avoid getting water in your mouth, eyes, or open wounds. By recreating responsibly, you can protect water quality, aquatic life and fellow community members.
Learn more about recreating safely this summer from the Keep It Clean Partnership.
