Residents Asked to Consider Sales Tax Extension in November Ballot

BC Ellections Logo

On August 22, 2022, the Town Board unanimously voted to place an item on the November ballot to extend a 0.16% sales tax which is set to expire on December 31, 2022. Town residents will be asked to vote to extend or not extend this sales tax.

The old tax paid for improvements to the US 36 and McCaslin Interchange, including the Diverging Diamond Interchange Improvements. The 0.16% sales/use tax extension will be limited to ten years and will pay only for Town of Superior's expenses as a result of the Marshall Fire.

Important facts for this ballot item:

  • This extension will NOT increase the Town's sales tax
  • The ONLY use of these monies is to help cover a portion of the Town expenses relating to the Marshall Fire recovery efforts. Over $12 million in expenses have been identified.
  • This tax extension will automatically EXPIRE on December 31, 2032
  • Even with this tax extension, Superior’s sales/use tax rate will be LOWER than all of our Boulder County neighbors (Boulder, Erie, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville)
  • Seventy percent of our sales tax revenues come from people residing OUTSIDE of the Town of Superior

Colorado Legislation Fights Single-Use Pollutants with a 10-Cent Surcharge on Disposable Bags

Reusable Bag

Did you know Coloradans use an estimated 4.6 million single-use plastic bags daily? Plastic bags are produced from non-renewable resources and are very difficult to recycle. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, so they remain as litter in the environment. This short video shares some pertinent facts and tips about reducing single-use bags and other plastics.

Colorado law will require some businesses in Superior to impose a 10-cent fee on disposable plastic and paper bags starting in 2023. Beginning in 2024, the same law will ban single-use plastic bags at most stores and expanded polystyrene foam takeout containers (more commonly known as Styrofoam™) at restaurants.

What establishments must follow the bag fee and ban?

  • Major grocery stores and supermarkets
  • Major convenience stores
  • Major liquor stores
  • Major retailers
  • Other major stores providing plastic shopping bags
  • Restaurants must follow the Styrofoam ban

Reducing and banning the use of these materials will reduce litter in our community, help keep our wildlife safe, and reduce the impact of plastics on our food chain.

U.S. 36 Bikeway Extension Project Continues Through October

Autry Park

The federally funded extension of the U.S. 36 Bikeway is progressing. The work within Autry Park was majority completed by mid-July and the portion along Rock Creek Parkway was majority completed in September.

The final segment along U.S. 36 is under construction and should be complete by late October 2022.

The total project length will be about 7,000 feet.

Sagamore Infrastructure Rebuild Project Underway

Sagamore Infrastructure Rebuild

In advance of home rebuilding, the Town and Xcel Energy are reconstructing infrastructure within the Sagamore Subdivision.

Damaged concrete removal and replacement is underway. Xcel Energy is rebuilding the gas and electric lines throughout the development and should be finished before winter.

Asphalt repairs will take place after most of the home construction is complete in late 2023 or 2024. Work for rebuilding the two parks in the subdivision will begin next spring.

CDOT Grant Funds Installation of Green Bike Lane Markings

Green Line bike crossing project

Superior received a grant through the Colorado Department of Transportation to install green bike lane markings where bike lanes cross vehicle paths on high volume arterial streets (McCaslin Blvd, Rock Creek Parkway and Coalton Road).

This safety improvement will improve the visibility and awareness of bicyclists through these sections of cross traffic.
