Residents Contribute to Cleaner Air by Ditching their Gas-Powered Lawn Equipment

On Saturday, May 14, Superior, Louisville and Lafayette partnered with the Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC), Eco-Cycle and the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management Facility (HMMF) to provide gas-powered lawn mower and leaf blower recycling to residents free of charge. Additionally, any interested resident could obtain a $150 voucher for a new electric mower and $50 for a new electric leaf blower. Staff and volunteers from the Advisory Committee for Environmental Sustainability (ACES) spent the day unloading vehicles and draining the gas and oil to ensure equipment was properly recycled! It was a very successful collection event with over 200 pieces of equipment recycled. Thank you to all the residents that participated and contributed to cleaner air in Superior.

Join the Town’s Newest and Greenest Partnership Program!

The Town of Superior is looking to partner with local organizations, groups, businesses and individuals to help support our zero waste community events and other sustainability efforts. These groups will form Green Teams!

What is a Green Team? Green Teams are groups willing to provide hands-on support for zero waste events and other sustainability efforts led by the Town. Green Teams will help guide the community in meeting zero-waste requirements.

Why form a Green Team partnership with the Town? In recognition of Green Team service, the Town will provide an in-kind match. Partnership matches will be based on tiers of service, including free business marketing or a non-profit donation. Green Teams will also support the Town of Superior’s municipal goal to keep 65% of waste out of the landfill by 2025 through reducing consumption, recycling, reusing and composting. Finally, by joining you will help increase the community’s understanding and execution of zero-waste efforts. Win, Win, Win!

blocks 9, 10, 11

Upcoming Sidewalk Closures in Downtown Superior

Carmel is now working on Blocks 6, 7, and the north portions of Blocks 9 ,10 and 11. Remington is constructing townhomes on the southern portions of Blocks 9, 10 and 11. Since there are zero setbacks from the sidewalks adjacent to Blocks 9, 10 and 11, construction will entail closure of the sidewalks surrounding these blocks as indicated in red on the provided graphic. There is a new sidewalk available along the north side of Old Rail Way from Promenade Drive to Gateway Drive, and along Gateway Drive, from Old Rail Way to Main Street as indicated in green in the image above.

Carmel’s work on Blocks 9, 10 and 11 will extend into 2023 while Remington will open sidewalks once its adjacent construction is safely out of the way of pedestrian paths. This should start happening by mid-summer.

US 36 Bikeway

US 36 Bikeway Extension Project

Construction has started on the US 36 Bikeway Extension project. This federally funded project extends the US 36 Bikeway along the south side of US 36 in Superior. On the west end this project would construct a 10 ft.-wide multi-use concrete trail along the south side of US 36 from the existing US 36 Bikeway bridge (near Avista Adventist Hospital) east under the US 36/88th Street bridge. On the east end, the trail will be constructed from the existing underpass of W. Flatiron Crossing Drive west through Autry Park to Rock Creek Parkway and turn north to 88th Street. The total project length will be about 7,000 feet.

Please be advised that initial work is being conducted within Autry Park and will require restricted access at times to some of the park’s amenities. Please observe detour signs and construction fencing during this construction period. This section of trail should be complete by the end of June.

Parking Ordinance Makes Superior Streets Safer

recreational vehicle

Preserving the quality of life in Superior’s neighborhoods requires effort from us all. To help keep our streets safe, the Town has a parking ordinance in our Municipal Code to prohibit semi-trailers from parking along public roads or right of way adjacent to a residential lot. It also requires trailers and recreational vehicles to be parked on a public street no more than 48 hours.

Due to their size, these types of vehicles inherently obscure visibility, especially at night. Children playing, joggers or the family pet crossing the road, can be hidden from view – increasing the likelihood of significant accidents. “Our rules are in line with surrounding communities and help keep our community safe,” according to Town Code Enforcement Officer Jammi Hedquist.

The Town recognizes that some residents use trailers and recreational vehicles for work and/or leisure. The 48-hours ordinance allows for short-term public street parking rather than prohibiting vehicles completely. The time frame is intended to provide balanced short-term access to these vehicles while keeping safety paramount in our residential neighborhoods.
