 Santa Clara residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) at a free drop-off event on Saturday, July 26. Advance registration is required by calling the County HHW Program at 408-299-7300 or visiting hhw.org. Accepted items include fluorescent lights, paint, automotive fluids, household cleaners, solvents, batteries, propane and helium tanks, fertilizers, prescription medications, and e-waste. For medications, remove personal information and place them in a separate container. This event helps protect public health and the environment through proper disposal.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling, and worm composting is an excellent method for turning fruit and vegetable scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment that benefits your garden and houseplants. On Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., join a Master Composter at Everett N. “Eddie” Souza Park, 2380 Monroe St., for a hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how to build, maintain, and troubleshoot a worm bin, making it easy to get started with composting at home. Registration is required and limited to 12 attendees. Santa Clara’s next Free Disposal Day will take place on Saturday, July 12, from 6 a.m. to noon at the Mission Trail Waste Systems (MTWS) Transfer Station. This event offers residents a convenient way to dispose of bulky items such as appliances, e-waste, mattresses, and furniture at no cost. Appointments are required and can be made through July 11 by calling MTWS at 408-727-5365. Space is limited. Proof of residency (a utility bill or driver’s license) is required and participants are responsible for unloading their vehicles.

Starting July 1, 2025, the City of Santa Clara will implement a 2.7% adjustment to the Business License Tax, as allowed under Santa Clara City Code Section 3.40.160 and in accordance with voter-approved Measure H (2022). This annual update reflects the February 2025 Consumer Price Index for the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Area.
The new rates are as follows:
- $46.22 per employee (up from $45.00)
- $15.40 per rental unit (up from $15.00)
- Annual cap per business: $359,450 (up from $350,000)

Santa Clara’s summer Citywide Garage Sale returns on Saturday, Aug. 9! Hosting a garage sale is a great opportunity to turn unwanted items into cash, while preventing usable items from ending up in the landfill. Residents can register online for individual, multi-family, or block garage sales from July 7 – Aug. 6 at SantaClaraCA.gov/GarageSale.  To help financially vulnerable customers, Silicon Valley Power offers a Financial Rate Assistance Program (FRAP) to provide a discount on the electric bill for all eligible customers. The program is tiered to provide the most help to customers who earn the least amount of money. Discounts range from 25-40%, depending on income eligibility. Hadestown: Teen Edition
This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Construction for the 2025 Annual Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project by the City’s contractor, Radius Earthwork Inc., will begin in late-June, with final project completion anticipated in December. The project consists of removing and replacing failed pavement areas, constructing new ADA-compliant curb ramps, installing hot mix asphalt, applying slurry seal surface treatments, and replacing pavement markings. Some of the residential neighborhoods receiving pavement treatments are:
- Warburton Avenue between Lawrence Expressway and San Tomas Expressway
- Cabrillo Avenue between Lawrence Expressway and Calabazas Boulevard
- Calle De Primavera, Fairway Glen Drive and Hogan Drive
- Los Olivos Avenue between Homestead Road and Forbes Avenue
- Pomeroy Avenue between El Camino Real and Homestead Road
- Washington Street between Poplar Street and Newhall Street

 If you’re looking to add battery backup to your existing solar photovoltaic (PV) system or add a new PV system with battery backup, Silicon Valley Power now offers a rebate for residential battery storage systems. Battery backup systems can provide power to critical appliances or medical devices during a power outage and can be charged by your PV system.
Batteries must be integrated with a PV system to be eligible. Incentives are $0.15 per Watt-hour up to $2,700. Income-qualified customers may receive an additional $2,000 in bonus incentives if enrolled in the Financial Rate Assistance Program. An additional $2,000 is available for income-qualified customers who meet LIHEAP income requirements.
Federal Tax Credits may also be available up to 30% of the cost of the batteries and for the installation of a new PV system. Batteries must have a capacity of at least 3 kilowatt hours to qualify. Consult your tax advisor for more information and any limitations that may apply.

The fiscal year’s close saw the end of Santa Clara’s contract with WaterSmart, an interactive customer water savings tool adopted in 2015, now operated by VertexOne. Based on customer feedback, Water & Sewer Utilities is actively seeking an alternative water use assessment tool that will better fit the City’s water conservation and messaging needs. Input from fellow member agencies of Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency and Valley Water continues to guide the consideration of a replacement. In the meantime, customers will see more conservation messaging in bill inserts, social media and updates at SantaClaraCA.gov/SaveOurWater.
