Let's Talk Water
As we head into the hottest time of year, be aware that this is also the highest time for water usage.
Potable water is the technical term for water delivered by pipe to your home. This water is treated and checked for purity EVERY DAY. The water from your tap is safe.
Water from other sources is not checked every day. Bottled water is checked about every two weeks, sometimes longer.
The price difference is also enormous. Tap water costs 1.3 cents per gallon, while bottled water costs at least $4 per gallon.
The minerals in water help it taste good and are necessary for good health. A filter for water does not make it healthier, but it does change the taste. These filters are usually just activated charcoal.
The infrastructure needed to deliver this clean water to your home is immense, but it is what makes modern living possible.
We live in a savannah and fresh water is a precious resource. Rain or shine there is never enough water to waste.
The City of Santa Clara has three sources for our water 61% groundwater, 20 SFPUC Hetch Hetchy and 19% Valley Water.
Approximately half of our water usage in the summer is for outdoor watering. Please water at night to minimize evaporation; about 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week is sufficient.
If your water bill has jumped or is steadily increasing, check for leaks. Food dye is a simple, easy method.
Remember, we are all in this together. Conservation of water needs to be a way of life.
