On Dec. 20, 1935, over 1,500 Placer County children of grammar school age or younger were welcomed into the Auburn State Theatre for the annual Christmas program. Santa Claus himself, Guy Lukens, welcomed each child. The record-breaking number of children forced the State Theatre employees to quickly put together 100 additional bags of candy so that each child could enjoy some sweet treats.
The annual event was sponsored by the Auburn State Theatre, the Auburn Lions Club and the Auburn Journal. This popular program provided a bright, comforting light during the dark and unsettling era of the Great Depression. The State Theatre continued to host Placer County children for a free special Christmas program through at least 1971.
