Approaching Thanksgiving Week & Redistricting
Dear Neighbors,
As we approach Thanksgiving, I reflect on the importance of the work that we have accomplished since I was elected to the Board of Supervisors.
I have never underestimated the importance of representing each and every one of you.
This week, the Board of Supervisors tackled the important issue of Redistricting. As the Supervisor for District 2, I have had the honor of connecting with neighbors, community leaders, business owners, and nonprofits that care about our community. This motivates me to be vocal about the importance of meeting all legal requirements set by the Federal Voting Rights Act, to create a fair and just process that respects the diversity within our County and maintains communities of interest. While there have been many maps proposed, only two remain under serious consideration. They are maps "5A-1" and "4C-1-A." My priority, as your Supervisor, is maintaining our long-standing communities of interests, educational institutions, public services, and parks and open spaces.
Please tune in to our special Redistricting Hearing on November 22, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Review the maps and comment Here: Link
If you have any further questions about the process or the proposed maps, you can reach out to our office at Katrina.foley@ocgov.com
This week, I also continued my efforts to bring healthcare to those who need it, promote workforce development to stabilize families, create a path to the middle class and eliminate homelessness, help our Veterans, improve infrastructure, and prioritize climate action to protect and sustain our District's oceans.
The community highlights for our team this week included…
- Supporting our Veterans at the Balboa Island Veteran's BBQ
- Attending the "Celebrating the Power of Hope" Awards at Northgate Gonzalez Headquarters in Anaheim
- The Huntington Beach's State of the City: Riding a New Wave
- Hosting an Animal Care Town Hall
- Joining with the community at the Segerstrom Family Tree Lighting in Costa Mesa
- Joining the City of Los Alamitos at the LA Unified School District - State of the District
- Attending the Mayor's Gala in Huntington Beach, in support of the city and their efforts to promote the arts and the APA program. Link
- Providing free COVID-19 test kits, diapers, and grocery gift cards to students in the Cal Works program at at the Orange Coast College
We continue to work on our Fly Friendly Program and our Homeless & Housing initiatives. I do hope you enjoy time with family and friends during the Thanksgiving week. We have so much to be grateful for here in the OC.

Find out the COVID-19 Vaccination Stats for Your City
**One important item to note, if the vaccination rate in your city appears dramatically decreased, this is because the graph now shows the expanded eligible population (ages 5 and up).
Our District is now distributing free COVID-19 saliva kit tests at vaccine clinics, schools, and through local non-profits! Supervisor Foley plans to distribute 10,000 saliva test kits, for at-home use, by the end of the year. Each kit includes free shipping.
"These kits will be in high demand as vaccinated residents gather for the holidays and aim to protect the elderly and immunocompromised friends and relatives." -- Supervisor Katrina Foley.
For more information or to collect a COVID-19 test kit for personal use or for a nonprofit organization, contact our office at (714) 834-3220

This week, a 14-member Select Committee chaired by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris met to determine effective spill prevention and response procedures. This is the first of several meetings to look for gaps and find improvements in how we take swift and appropriate action when containing oil spills. I welcome the learnings of the Committee and remain thankful that the recent Huntington Beach Oil Spill was so quickly contained.
While local fisheries are expected to open soon, Orange County Health Officer Dr. Clayton Chau has recommended abstaining from consuming contaminated fish or seafood from affected beaches until complete offshore sampling of seafood is completed. Read more: Here

- 2 Maps Approved for Consideration
-
A $15,000 donation from the Lloyd Family Trust. These funds will help cover the costs of feeding, sheltering, and caring for more than 18,000 animals rescued from OC Animal Care each year.
-
A contract to expand the County’s Suicide Prevention and Support Services. This expansion of services will to help ensure that individuals in a crisis have access to supportive suicide prevention, intervention, post-care services, and follow-up care.
-
Contracts with several different entities, with the goal of health equity for Orange County residents. These contracts are funded by a Center for Disease Control (CDC) COVID-19 Health Disparity Grant. While I voted for this agenda item to accept the federal funds for this contract, I raised concerns about including COVID-19 in the stated priorities and requested a more itemized accounting into use of these funds.

Charlene Ashendorf -- Senior Citizen Advisory Council
On Friday, November 12, 2021, I attended my first meeting at the Senior Citizen Advisory Council.
The Zoom meeting consisted of more than 25 members who were engaged and very committed to the work of the Council. Committee chairs provided detailed, yet succinct updates on their work.
First, Erica Danczak provided an update on the work of the OC Community Veterans Services Office. The work of the VSO, throughout the pandemic, is impressive and I believe that it's safe to say that Orange County is leading the state in services to our veterans!
Next, Cynthia Thacker, SCL Coordinator, shared an update on the availability of iPads for seniors in the county.
Also, Elaine Gennawey, Chair, presented updates on SCAC membership, SCAC, and BOS appointments and the February 2022 workshop.
I attended the Senior Citizens Engagement Committee meeting on November 15th and the Housing & Transportation Committee meeting, on November 18th; as a result, I have requested that to represent SCAC on the Housing and Transportation Committee.
I am also looking forward to getting my appointment as Senior Center Liaison to a couple of centers, including one in Costa Mesa.
I can't tell you how proud I am to serve!

Hello District 2,
Last weekend, the Supervisor hosted a big item pickup with Rossmoor and our OC Waste & Recycling. Thanks to CR&R for helping with this community clean up. Monday Morning, I joined the Supervisor at the Huntington Beach’s State of the City: Riding a New Wave into 2022. We had an amazing time speaking and conversing with city leaders, business, and residents. We learned about the return of tours by CR&R. On Monday evening, I had the opportunity to represent our office at the UCI Medical Center – Irvine Groundbreaking ceremony. The center will be finished in 2025 and will be a world class facility.
Save your calendars for the Rossmoor Winter Festival in the beautiful community of Rossmoor on Saturday December 11th, at Rush Park from 4 PM-9 PM. Make sure to bring your family and friends and come enjoy the festivities. There will be great local performers, food trucks, vendor area, kids’ zone, a fun snow zone with sledding hills, and of course Santa will be stopping by to say hello!
The Rossmoor Community Service District will also offer a $10 wristband that includes access to the snow zone and kids’ zone, petting zoo, pony ride, photo booth, and some other great photo opportunities as well. We hope you can make it!

Arts Business Grant Programs & More
What a crazy week!
I started the week by staffing the Supervisor at a spectacular event for the Balboa Museum of Art, where we presented a $20,000 check as part of our District 2 Arts Business Grant program. The Balboa Fun Zone has been transformed from a place that catered to children to entertainment for people of all ages-- including a band, a silent auction, and a variety of fun drinks! The following day, we returned to Balboa Island for their annual Veterans BBQ, where the Newport Beach Firefighters assisted in grilling BBQ for some of our local Veterans.
Additionally, I staffed the Supervisor at an innovative event in Anaheim titled "Celebrating the Power of Hope," which was co-hosted by Latino Health Access and Northgate Markets. The event included a drive-through experience where we sampled cuisines from three different Latin countries and watched cultural performances. I thoroughly enjoyed tasting each dish and learning about the three distinct cultures.
Later that week, I joined Supervisor Foley at Cal State Fullerton, where we spoke to a political science class about the Board of Supervisors! Our message captivated the students and, as a student currently attending CSUF, I was ecstatic to see how engaged my fellow students were!
My week came to an end in Los Alamitos, where the Supervisor and I attended the Los Alamitos School District's State of the District Breakfast. We met and learned a lot about the incredible work that the school district is doing to provide for their students, as well as the challenges they faced during the pandemic. We couldn't be more proud of our incredible Los Alamitos School District faculty and administrators.

Meet Rhett!
Meet Rhett! This four-year-old Grey-Nosed-Pitbull was brought to OC Animal Care as a stray back in July. Rhett came to us with a deep ear infection, which was quickly treated by our medical team and has since been cleared!
This sweet boy loves letting off some great energy on long walks with our staff, and he practices great leash manners! Rhett is an exceptional learner and knows how to sit, stay, come, shake, and lay down, and we even think he might be potty trained!
Rhett is the perfect mix of snuggles and playtime and is known for rolling over on the ground and asking for a good belly rub! We believe that this handsome boy will do best in an adult-only home, or a home with kids above the age of 15.
