The Southern Marin Scoop
A MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY & ITEMS OF INTEREST
Please Share Widely:
Dear Southern Marin Friends,
I have a lot of information to share with you today, however let me begin by sharing a message of solidarity. It’s no secret that our County and our world face urgent challenges on many fronts, including racial justice, inclusion, and systemic racism. These are not issues that any of us can solve alone, by ourselves. These are issues that must be solved by all of us working together. By coming together as a community, we can make real change and can make real progress on the challenges we face. If we each give a little, we all get a lot.
I want everyone to know that I stand alongside our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family during this difficult time. As the Government Alliance on Racial Equity said so well in a recent message to its members, "We must not only stand by the AAPI community today but commit to the long-term work of building an inclusive multiracial democracy where AAPI ... can thrive as an essential part of the American tapestry and relegate the horrors of anti-AAPI hate crimes to an incomprehensible past."
I am committed to continuing to work to address systemic racism and build an equitable Marin for all. If you are interested in learning more about what the County of Marin is doing in response to violence against AAPI communities, please consider joining the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, April 13. we will be considering a Resolution Condemning and Combating Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Additionally, we are working both internally as a County organization and externally with the community to further equity in Marin.
Thank you for reading my message, and I hope you'll continue reading below for a wide variety of items of interest in today's issue of the Southern Marin Scoop.
Warmly,
Stephanie

SURVEY: If you live, work, or recreate on or around Richardson's Bay, your input is requested!
The Tam Valley Sea Level Rise Task Force is asking residents around Richardson's Bay to express their views about sea level rise by participating in this ten-question survey (less than 5 minutes). The results of the survey will guide the Task Force's planning for next steps in preparation for the all-too-near future challenges. Please reply to the survey by April 15. If you have any questions, please email TamValleyNRG@gmail.com, and for additional information and resources from their February 23rd community forum, please see the March 12 edition of The Southern Marin Scoop.

Thank you for sharing your concerns
I’ve been hearing about a number of traffic-related issues and concerns in the Tam Valley area, extending up the mountain as well. I understand there is quite a conversation happening on NextDoor on this topic, too. I want you to know that I'm taking these issues seriously and have been speaking with County and community partners to look into causes and solutions.
Our road network, built in the 50’s and 60’s, simply wasn’t designed or built for the local and visitation traffic that comes through Tam Valley. There is no magic solution -- but there are strategies to try to manage and calm it, and I am pursuing these. I look forward to providing an update on this topic soon. Please be sure to subscribe to my Traffic Updates so you're in the loop about planning, progress, and opportunities to provide input.

April is Drug Take-Back Month in Marin
Safe disposal saves lives. The 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that a majority of misused prescription opioid medications were obtained from family and friends in some way – usually given to them or taken without asking. Medicines that languish and are left in unlocked locations are highly susceptible to diversion and misuse.
April's Drug Take-Back Month is a perfect chance to deposit unused and unwanted medications into one of 24 receptacles located around the county, or take advantage of a mail-back option that is also available. Read the news release to learn more.

What Helps Me — Youth Art Campaign
The What Helps Me Art Campaign, happening now through May 15, invites youth in Marin to tell their story of emotions and mental health through art, whether it be a drawing, painting, poem, dance, sculpture, music, video, or any other art form that helps them express their message and feelings.
Submissions will be showcased during May Mental Health Month on social media as well as County websites. This campaign will promote the importance of mental health among youth in Marin. Note that art will be submitted anonymously, so no names will be shown with art when showcased. Click here to learn more.
May 1 & 2 - Youth Mental Health Summit
Additionally, the Marin County Youth Commission's Mental Health Subcommittee is looking for 50 young people (8th-12th grade) from all over Marin to attend a virtual summit from 10am-12pm on May 1 & 2. During these interactive and youth-led sessions, participants will learn about demystifying mental health, suicide prevention, and how to support themselves and their peers with mental health struggles. Participants will also learn about resources to empower youth to continue practicing what they learn in the sessions and feel supported going forward in their advocacy for mental health at every level.
These flyers (English/Spanish) have more information, and you can register to attend here.
