Community Services & Parks Honored with CPRS 2025 Award of Excellence in Park Planning

The California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) has honored Glendale’s Community Services & Parks Department with the 2025 Award of Excellence in Park Planning for the Fremont Park Renovation Project. Guided by extensive community input dating back to 2015, the project brought new recreation amenities to south Glendale and prioritized accessible design elements, long‑term functionality, and thoughtful planning.

Now a vibrant neighborhood destination, Fremont Park features active recreation areas, shaded gathering spaces, accessibility upgrades, and sustainable elements. Since its Grand Re‑Opening on October 11, 2025, the 7.9‑acre park has seen renewed activity and stands as a model for how innovative, community‑driven planning can create a thriving and valued public space.

$500,000 Grant Awarded for
New South Glendale Park Project

The Department has received a $500,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District to support planning and design for the 1000 S. Central Ave Park Project. This project is part of RPOSD’s largest competitive grant investment in Measure A history–allocating more than $78 million across 72 planning and construction projects and 48 awardees.

The project will transform a 2.39-acre former commercial site—previously occupied by a large retail building and surface parking lot, including the former JOANN Fabric and Crafts store—into a vibrant new public park in south Glendale, an area identified as having a high need for park space. Planned amenities may include play areas, walking paths, picnic spaces, fitness equipment, and drought-tolerant landscaping.

This marks the City’s first major park land acquisition in over 25 years. Community input will help shape the park’s final design, with outreach efforts expected to begin in mid-2026.

Celebrating Community Partnerships:
Honoring Local Businesses

The Department is proud to recognize outstanding community partners whose generosity and commitment continue to enrich the lives of Glendale residents. During recent Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission meetings, two local businesses were honored for their meaningful contributions and ongoing support.

On February 23, 2026, the Department recognized Byblos Mediterranean Bakery for its unwavering dedication to community service. Through its generous support of youth enrichment programs, family-centered events, and essential senior services, Byblos Mediterranean Bakery has helped foster connection, wellness, and social engagement throughout the community. Their partnership has made a lasting and positive impact, strengthening programs that serve residents of all ages.

On March 16, 2026, recognition was given to Magic Jump Rentals for its continued generosity and enthusiastic support of a wide range of City programs. From childcare and youth initiatives to large-scale community events, Magic Jump Rentals has played an important role in creating memorable experiences and bringing people together. Their contributions have helped build a stronger sense of community and enhanced the quality of life for Glendale residents.

We extend our sincere appreciation to both honorees for their valued partnerships and ongoing commitment to service.

Edison Eagles Take the ASYSP Basketball Championship!

The One Glendale After School Youth Sports Program wrapped up its basketball season on March 13 at Hoover High School with an exciting night of games and community spirit.

Edison Eagles (Team A) claimed the title over Muir Mustangs (Team B), 17–9
Consolation Game:
Jefferson Tigers (Team A) edged RD White Mustangs (Team B), 19–18

Congratulations to all teams and players for a fantastic season filled with teamwork, growth, and sportsmanship! Special thanks to the Edison Eagles Dance Team for an energetic halftime performance and to the Hoover High School Band for providing music that helped create a fun, celebratory atmosphere.

2026 High School Employment & Resource Fair

Our Youth & Family Services unit will host the 2026 GUSD High School Employment and Resource Fair across local campuses in March and April.

Held during lunchtime, the fair connects students with part-time jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities, and on-the-spot job readiness support. Participants can meet representatives from local and state agencies, educational institutions, and various GUSD departments.

Underwater Bottleneck by Elizabeth Criss and Sari Scheer is on display at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station from Monday, April 13 – Friday, June 26, 2026. Underwater Bottleneck reimagines the Gas Station as a deep-sea tableau. Schools of fish crafted from discarded plastics and repurposed wine bottles float gracefully overhead, as jellyfish drift above a glowing mound of empty jugs – a scene that reflects both ocean resilience and fragility. Glass bottle fish, filled with plastic debris, reveal the dangers ocean life faces when they mistake our trash for food. This playful transformation invites viewers to reconsider everyday choices and discover creative solutions to marine plastic pollution.

This temporary art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission, funded by the Urban Art Program, and supported by Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.

Pacific Community Pool is open year-round and maintained at a comfortable ~83 degrees! Program Registration

• April swim lessons: Registration began Tuesday, March 31.
• May swim lessons: Registration begins Tuesday, April 21 at 9:00 AM for verified residents and 10:00 AM for everyone.
• Summer swim lessons (June-August): Registration opens Tuesday, May 12 at 9:00 AM for verified residents, and Thursday, May 14 at 9:00 AM for all participants. Unlike the September–May lessons, where registration is based on a specific level, summer class registration is based on your preferred time slot. All levels are available at each time, with the exception of Parent & Me and Adult classes, which are offered at designated times only.

Important Tips

• Lesson spaces will fill up quickly, so before you register, ensure your 2026 residency is verified and your online account at MyGlendaleParks.com is up-to-date.
• If you experience delays during registration, please refresh your page.

Private pool rentals, as well as Wading Pool rentals for summer, are also available. Wading pool reservations are available during non-operational hours from June 13-August 18, 2026. Weekend reservations are available through September 27.  If you are interested in reserving a wading pool outside of these dates, please call for availability.  Reserve early!

At the heart of the experience is the HO-scale Verdugo Valley Lines—a carefully crafted landscape where trains wind through towns, industries, and scenic vistas. Watch as freight cars rumble past, signals change, and entire stories unfold across the layout.

Volunteers are on hand to answer questions, share techniques, and give you a behind-the-scenes look at how these intricate railroads are built and operated. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just stopping by out of curiosity, there’s plenty to take in.

Bring your camera—there’s no shortage of fascinating details and moving moments waiting to be captured.

Brand Park Tea House Renovation Completed

The renovation of the Tea House at Brand Park is now complete, and visitors are warmly invited to experience the refreshed space. Enhancements include new exterior paint, repairs and replacement of wood decking, reinforced railings, roof improvements, and several additional refinements to preserve and enhance the structure.

Parks Facilities Closed for Renovation

Babe Herman Restroom Renovation

Construction is currently underway to rehabilitate the restroom building north of Babe Herman Little League Field and improve accessibility. The restroom will remain closed through mid-April 2026 during this project.

To accommodate visitors, two portable restrooms will be available on-site during this time.

Please note: A portion of the adjacent parking lot will also be under construction. Visitors are encouraged to park in Lot 34 or use available street parking.

Maple Park Gym Ceiling Project

Join the Trail Safety Patrol

As a Trail Safety Patrol (TSP) volunteer, you'll play a vital role in enhancing public safety and protecting resources across the city's parks. Your presence and assistance will help improve visitors' experience while ensuring a safe environment. The TSP consists of two units: the Mountain Bike Unit and the Hike Unit.

Requirements:

• Must be 18 years or older
• Complete a background check and City-mandated trail safety training
• Attend a First Aid/CPR certification course
• Be in good physical health
• Commit to a minimum of two hours per month

Fitness Classes and
Drop-In Activities for Seniors

Stay active, social, and engaged with a wide variety of senior programs offered at three convenient locations: Adult Recreation Center, Pacific Community Center, and Sparr Heights Community Center.

Participants can enjoy fitness classes that keep you moving and feeling great, including aerobics, slow stretch, Zumba, line dancing, yoga, and muscle toning. In addition, a range of drop-in activities provides opportunities to connect, relax, and have fun—from bingo, karaoke, and Senior Mixer events to billiards, bridge, woodcarving, pickleball, table tennis, knitting, book club, Color & Chat, and more.

An active Activity Card is required to participate.

Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA)

The Glendale Youth Alliance (GYA) offers paid work experience opportunities for youth ages 14 to 24, empowering young individuals to gain valuable job skills and career exposure. GYA is especially committed to supporting youth who face barriers to employment, including foster youth, individuals with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, parenting youth, and youth on probation.

Eligible participants are enrolled into the program, matched with paid job placements across diverse industries, and provided with comprehensive case management and mentorship.

Glendale Youth Alliance offers incentive for employers who are willing to host youth at their site, train, mentor and offer an opportunity for employment. Grant funds cover youth worker wages and workers compensation for the initial 120-200 hours (depending on the program).

Vocational Training

Take control of your career path! Short-term Vocational Training can assist you in gaining the competitive edge you need to get back into the workforce. Verdugo Jobs Center administers special training grants that can cover the cost of vocational training for those who qualify! The Verdugo Jobs Center recently received additional funds from the State of California to assist individuals who were recently laid off or will be laid off from JPL! Employment and Specialized Training Services are available to those who qualify. Make Your Reservations for
Indoor and Outdoor Parks Facilities

You can view availability of most facilities and book picnic and community building reservations online!  Please visit MyGlendaleParks.com to book your picnic or community building reservation online and hold your preferred facility/date for a nonrefundable deposit of $50.00.  Once held, a customer service representative will reach out to process your full payment and confirm the reservation.  The deposit will be applied towards your rental fees at the time of confirmation.

We take reservations for rental of community center spaces, the Civic Auditorium, community buildings within parks, picnic areas, and wedding venues.  Jumpers/Bouncers are allowed with a jumper permit and facility permit. We look forward to serving you and meeting your rental needs!
