Glendale Celebrates Achievement in Converting all Handheld Landscape Maintenance Equipment to Electric
The City of Glendale proudly announces its achievement as the largest city in the nation to earn the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) Certified Green Zone designation. This milestone follows the successful conversion of all handheld landscape maintenance equipment to electric, marking a shift towards environmental sustainability and reduced noise pollution.
Transitioning from gas-powered to electric landscaping tools presented challenges, acknowledged by Onnig Bulanikian, Community Services & Parks Director: "We recognized the hurdles in this transition, but it was a necessary step towards fulfilling our commitment to environmental stewardship and enhancing the quality of life for our community. By embracing electric equipment, we are actively reducing emissions and noise levels in Glendale."
Mayor Dan Brotman expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Community Services & Parks Department, stating, "I commend our Community Services & Parks Department for spearheading this initiative. By achieving this milestone, we demonstrate our commitment to sustainability while ensuring the continued cleanliness and safety of our parks. This accomplishment is a testament to the proactive approach of our city in addressing environmental challenges."
A press conference was held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Glendale Sports Complex, to celebrate this historic achievement.
In alignment with Glendale's commitment to environmental sustainability, the city has implemented measures to enforce its prohibition on gas-powered leaf blowers. Since September 2023, the use of gas-powered leaf blowers has been prohibited, with homeowners and property owners held accountable for compliance. Beginning September 2024, enforcement efforts will be intensified, with penalties for violations as follows:
- First Violation: Written warning notice with a request for voluntary compliance.
- Failure to comply within 30 days incurs a $100 administrative fine.
- Second Violation: $200 administrative fine.
- Third Violation: $500 administrative fine.
Residents are encouraged to report violations to the City of Glendale's Code Compliance team at (818) 548-3700.
For additional details on the gas-powered leaf blower prohibition and upcoming events, please visit GlendaleCA.gov/LeafBlower.
Questions about the ordinance can be submitted at Sustainability@GlendaleCA.gov.

Wings of Earth Art Installation
Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station 1020 E. Palmer Ave., Glendale, CA 91205 Now - May 31, 2024
Artists Vivien Adamian and Natalia Ira Sookias' installation titled Wings of Earth is on display at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station from Monday, March 25, 2024 - Friday, May 31, 2024. Wings of Earth transforms the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station into a cultural "community sacred space" for reflection on land and loss. Adamian and Sookias created a series of hanging objects inspired by decorative ceramics from ancient Armenian churches, and vessels whose naturalistic contours and folds recall peaks and valleys from lands lost, both literal and metaphorical. Drawing from ancestral and contemporary stories of hope and grief, the artists wish to offer viewers a space of reflection and awe.
The reflection space, occupied by ceramic eggs, wings, aghamans (Armenian salt jars), and other evocative clay objects, creates a dialogue about how we process loss and conceive of hope in diaspora communities. Though Armenian culture is represented in the design of this installation, the artists’ aim is for the art to transcend cultural boundaries and remind the many communities in Glendale what it means to extend a hand during difficult times.
This temporary art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Program, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.
Art installations at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station are sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission and the Community Services & Parks Department, an ongoing open call for artists submissions can be found at: GlendaleArtsAndCulture.org/ArtistOpportunites.
