Art Exhibit: "Mimipachico"
Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station 1020 E. Palmer Ave., Glendale, CA 91205 Through November 10, 2023
A new art exhibit, “Mimipachico” by Vanessa Marie Gomez, has been installed at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station and will be on exhibit through November 10, 2023.
Mímipachico is a mystical experience displaying a paper mache sculpture of an alebrije, a brightly colored fantastical creature originating from Mexican folk art. Mímipachico is a mix of raccoon, deer, and swallowtail butterfly, with sycamore tree inspirations. It thrives in forests, and like most alebrijes, Mímipachico is an elusive creature. The unique plumage on its back resembles that of a human face which is used to deter predators. Although many might find this alebrije haunting with its human mimicry, locals know it’s actually gentle-natured. It is said that Mímipachico helps those who are lost in the forest at night find their way back to safety with its glowing patterns. Lost children in particular remember feeling safe around Mímipachico. Inversely, Mímipachico is said to drive away those with ill intent from the forest. Because of these behaviors, Mímipachico is often called a guardian of the forest. Mímipachico rests on a wooden platform with a simple environment consisting of hanging leaves and tree trunks. Atmospheric lights and nature sound effects turn on at sundown.
This temporary art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Fund, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.
