Donate Items to Help Keep Our Unhoused Neighbors Safe from Summer Heat
With warmer weather here, the needs of our unhoused neighbors change. The City is continuing its partnership with Bay Area Community Services (BACS) and asking the community to donate items our unhoused neighbors need during these warmer months. Donated items will be distributed through City programs and services, such as the Safe Parking Program and the Housing Resource Center.

The South Bay Connect (SBC) project aims to enhance the Capitol Corridor passenger rail service with a more direct connection between Oakland and San Jose by relocating trains to the Coast Subdivision (in Ardenwood) and away from Niles and Centerville. A new station would be provided at Fremont’s existing Ardenwood Park-and-Ride lot and the existing Centerville Station would remain to support growing service by Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) trains.
The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed SBC project. The public is encouraged to submit input about the project online and/or by attending upcoming virtual public meetings on June 12 and June 20. The deadline to submit feedback is July 15. To learn more about the project and submit feedback on the draft EIR, please visit the South Bay Connect website.
Consider serving the City of Fremont as a commissioner or advisory board member! The City of Fremont Community Services Department currently has vacancies on its Recreation Commission, Youth Advisory Commission, and George W. Patterson House Advisory Board.
At the June 5 Recreation Commission meeting, Leah Martinez, the California Parks & Recreation Society (CPRS) Awards Chair presented the City of Fremont Community Services Department and the Recreation Commission with two Awards of Excellence. The first award celebrated Fremont's Excellence in Park Design/Planning of the Dusterberry Neighborhood Park. The project demonstrated high standards of planning, design, community input, accessibility, and operations which transformed an abandoned car dealership to a community gem. The second award was for Marketing & Communication and recognized the department's outstanding publication of the 2023 Summer Camps Recreation Guide. The guide showcased Fremont's prehistoric history through an innovative marketing campaign, creating memorable experiences for the community. These awards recognize City staff’s commitment to achieving excellence in Parks & Recreation and serving the Fremont Community.
On Monday, June 3, the City of Fremont celebrated the grand opening of the Central Park Knoll Pickleball Courts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The newly unveiled facility features eight beautiful pickleball courts, now available for drop-in use. This vibrant addition to Central Park provides a fantastic new recreational option for the entire community, promoting active living and community engagement. The courts overlook scenic views of Lake Elizabeth and Mission Peak, making them a picturesque and exciting destination for all pickleball enthusiasts in Fremont. Don't want to wait for a drop-in court? Book a fee based court online for a guaranteed date and time at the Fremont Tennis Center. Visit www.RegeRec.com or call 510-790-5510 for more details.
The City of Fremont will be initiating a monitoring program for a tiny, tree-damaging bark beetle called the Invasive Shothole Borer (ISHB). This non-native beetle is believed to have been introduced from Asia and was first detected in Southern California in 2012. ISHB has now recently been detected in neighboring Santa Clara County. ISHB introduces a fungus into the tree that causes decline, branch dieback, and eventually tree death. Common landscape trees like sycamore, cottonwood, sweetgum, trident maple, willow, and box elder are especially susceptible.
Regular monitoring is recommended by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources to facilitate early detection of ISHB. The City will be installing sticky panel traps, as seen in the above photo, in strategic locations on City property to monitor for activity.
If you want to learn more about the issues and opportunities facing the City of Fremont, stay tuned! Fremont Mayor Lily Mei will be presenting the annual State of the City Address on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:00 am at the Fremont Downtown Event Center, located at 3500 Capitol Ave. The event is free and open to the public (no ticket required). The Fremont Chamber of Commerce is hosting this event.
In case you can’t make it, the State of the City Address will be rebroadcasted on Fremont Cable TV Channel 27, as well as posted to the City website by the end of the following week.
