Fremont Receives First-Ever Platinum Designation for Advancing Solar Energy
We are proud to announce that the City of Fremont has received a Platinum designation from the national SolSmart program, recognizing exceptional achievements in advancing solar energy use at the local level. Fremont is the very first community in the country to earn this prestigious designation!
In order to achieve SolSmart Platinum designation, the City:
- adopted instant solar permitting through the SolarAPP+ program,
- posted public metrics and numerous online resources for community members interested in installing solar,
- installed solar systems on multiple City-owned properties, and
- formed community partnerships to equitably expand solar in the city by leveraging funds from foundations and state government. That included partnerships with affordable housing developers and groups such as ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability and Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley.
SolSmart is a U.S. Department of Energy program led by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). SolSmart offers free technical assistance to help local governments advance solar energy deployment. Their team was able to work with City staff to ensure that more of our community members take advantage of this clean energy source.
Fremont is one of over 500 cities, towns, and regional organizations that have achieved SolSmart designation for their solar energy leadership but is the first to achieve the new Platinum level!

 Fremont Celebrates Lunar New Year
Happy Lunar New Year! We’re honored to display the Lunar New Year flag outside City Hall from February 8-29.
Last year, Fremont Police and Fire Departments conducted a pilot program to evaluate the emerging technology known as Drone as First Responder (DFR). DFR utilizes Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) launched from a fixed location to respond rapidly to public safety incidents. The goal of DFR is to arrive on-scene ahead of responding public safety personnel.
Once the UAV arrives on scene, a certified teleoperator (the pilot) scans and evaluates the situation remotely, relaying information to responding public safety personnel and those in command of the incident. The live-stream video from the UAV is also directly available to the responders and commanders. This information provides enhanced real-time situational awareness to determine the best tools, tactics, and resources, aiding in better decision-making and de-escalation if possible. The information further allows first responders to observe fire behavior, identify threatened exposure threats during structure or wildland fires, fire mapping, hazardous material incidents, and identify potential rescues.
Fremont Police and Fremont Fire Departments will present to Fremont City Council at their February 13, 2024, council meeting regarding the deployment of the Fremont Public Safety DFR program.

Score Big for the Environment
Ready for some football? The big game is almost here. As you huddle with friends and family to cheer on the 49ers, remember that the environment needs a win too! Every action counts, no matter how big or small. Here's a "green" game plan to follow:
Tackle Recycling:
Collect empty cans and bottles. Toss those clean and dry cans and bottles in the blue bin. They'll get to make a comeback as something new.
Become a Composting Champion:
Don't let those leftover nachos end up in the landfill. Toss food scraps and food-soiled paper like pizza boxes, paper plates, and napkins in the green bin. They'll transform into nutrient-rich compost to help our gardens grow.
Serve up Sustainable Snacks:
Choose local, seasonal ingredients whenever possible. Skip the pre-packaged dips and chips and whip up your own creations with reusable containers.
Thanks for doing your part to help us create a climate ready Fremont. We make a great team!

Kickoff Your ‘Go Safely’ Game Plan
As the excitement builds for this weekend’s big sporting event, the Fremont Police Department reminds football fans to intercept impaired driving if they're heading out to a sports party and plan on drinking. Make sure you stick to the “Go Safely” game plan and choose a sober way to go.
On Sunday, February 11, the Fremont Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Fremont Police Department reminds the public that alcohol is not the only substance that impairs. Marijuana, prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs may also impair your ability to drive safely. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect you.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
