City of Fremont Offers 2024 Urban Forestry Learning Course
The City of Fremont’s Urban Forestry Division, in partnership with ReScape and with generous grant funding from CalFire, is excited to announce a new urban forestry learning course tailored to our community. This course is designed to empower residents to become stewards of our urban canopy, fostering a deeper connection to our environment, and providing the tools and knowledge to create a greener, healthier city. Sessions will cover fundamental topics, providing a strong foundation in urban forestry as well as practical experiences and skills for maintaining and caring for urban trees.
Topics covered will include:
- Tree biology: Understand tree growth patterns and the biology that makes them flourish in urban environments.
- Species identification and benefits: Learn to identify common tree species in Fremont and discover the myriad of benefits trees bring to our city, from improved air quality to cooler streets.
- Soil science: Explore the physical properties of soil, soil texture, the importance of organic matter, and where roots grow.
- Water management: Learn how water moves through soil, explore proper watering techniques for young and established trees, and discover how to care for trees during drought conditions.
- Proper planting technique: Explore the art of planting trees in urban environments, ensuring their healthy establishment.
- To amend or not to amend: Understand when and why soil amendments may be necessary during tree planting and care.
- Early staking, watering, and mulching: Learn the best practices for staking young trees, proper watering, and mulching to promote growth and stability.
Registration for this course is $50, and scholarships are available.
