 Winter Storm
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire Bay Area beginning tomorrow, Saturday, February 3 at 4:00 pm through Monday, February 5 at 10:00 am. A Wind Advisory will take effect on Sunday from 4:00 am to 10:00 pm. A High Wind Warning is in effect during this time at higher elevations, including the Vargas Plateau and eastern portions of Mill Creek Road.
Based on today’s forecast, expect approximately 2.0” rain in Fremont during this time, and gusts up to 50 mph. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and isolated power outages are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
To help community members stay safe and be prepared this rainy season, here are some resources:
-
Sandbags: Protect your property from hazards by keeping storm drains clear of debris and having sandbags handy. The City provides sand and bags for Fremont residents and businesses (maximum of 10 bags and while supplies last). Just bring your shovel to one of the three designated locations throughout the city. For more information on inventory replenishment and sandbag alternatives, please send us an email.
-
Know your risk for flooding. Preparations can include checking whether your property is located in a flood zone, purchasing flood insurance, building responsibly, and developing an evacuation plan for your family.
-
Know who to call for services in Fremont during a storm.

On January 31, in advance of the anticipated storms and strong winds, four Fremont firefighters and one Battalion Chief were deployed as part of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CAL OES) prepositioned fire personnel and engines in Alameda County.
Over the next couple of days, Fremont Fire Engine 354 (E-354) will be part of CAL OES Strike Team 2870C, which has been staffed to proactively prepare for and respond to storm-related incidents. Within Fremont, E-354 will be monitoring the hills, canyon area, Mill Creek Road, Mission Peak, and any surrounding areas in need of assistance, in addition to being a part of any assignments Strike Team 2870C is given.

The Silicon Valley Business Journal hosted a Silicon Valley Mayor’s Economic Forecast event on February 1 featuring a local mayor panel. Fremont's proactive planning for economic cycles, capturing development during market strength, and ensuring fiscal sustainability with policies prioritizing reserves and responsible spending were highlighted. Fremont’s Downtown was also discussed as the city has made significant progress, with multiple mixed-use projects and new establishments on Capitol Avenue, including the nearing completion of the Catalyst/Gateway project. The discussion also touched on the need for regional collaboration in economic development, emphasizing the region's strengths, and addressed labor issues, workforce development, and efficient permitting processes, including adopting electronic plan check and permitting processes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Fremont Downtown Event Center has earned an esteemed 2023 American Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design!

Fremont's steadfast commitment to sustainable practices and green initiatives shines through as the Downtown Event Center clinches this prestigious honor in the mixed-use building category.

With a rich legacy of being early adopters, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Silicon Valley leads the way in market share of new electric vehicles (EVs). However, one city has come out on top; Fremont has firmly established itself among the top ZIP codes in California for EV owners, showcasing a community-wide embrace of EVs.
Ava Community Energy (Ava), Fremont’s power provider, recently highlighted Fremont in an article covering the growth of electric vehicle sales in Alameda and San Joaquin Counties, stating that “Fremont has the most BEVs on the road, with 13,500 at the end of 2022. Fremont ZIP code 94539 (which includes the Tesla factory) has the highest number of EVs per household, at 0.3. In other words, almost one in three households has an EV on average.”
