Each year around Thanksgiving we are bombarded with a mad rush of advertising all the way through the December holiday season. Black Friday—the biggest shopping day of the year—has become a widely recognized cultural phenomenon, and Cyber Monday is quickly catching up in significance. But nestled between these two days of hot deals on new toasters and TV sets is a very important day that should not go ignored: Small Business Saturday. And this year it is especially important to spend your dollars at your favorite shops and restaurants in Fremont and show your support! Fremont's small businesses are the cultural identifiers that help us create a sense of place and community. They give our residents a source of pride and are what make Fremont unique. Fremont has over 3,400 small businesses who collectively employ more than 27,000 people. One in every four jobs in Fremont is tied to a small business. Shopping at small businesses keeps the dollars you spend in our community, creating a more local, sustainable, and circular economy!

Nationally, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, the day before Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas Eve.
As you begin preparing your holiday schedule, please remember to include fire safety as part of your plan! The Fremont Fire Department encourages following a few simple safety tips so you can enjoy time with loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire:
- Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
- Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
- Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
- Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns.
- Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
Check out the National Fire Protection Association for additional tips.
As the holiday season approaches, it's time to plan for sustainable practices that can help make the season even more joyful. When giving, wrapping, cooking, or eating, there’s always a “greener,” more sustainable way to celebrate! To go “green,” this holiday season, check out StopWaste’s Sustainable Holiday Guide.
