On Friday, April 16, the Earn & Learn Fremont pilot program (ELF)—our innovative economic development initiative that seeks to help transition COVID-displaced workers into careers in advanced manufacturing—celebrated the completion of its first cohort with a virtual graduation ceremony. The City’s Economic Development team established this program in partnership with Ohlone College, Evolve Manufacturing, San Jose’s work2future, Alameda County Workforce Development Board, and our Human Services Department. Participants completed a paid 8-week internship at Evolve, along with a virtual, customized training from Ohlone College. In addition to the invaluable work experience gained, graduates of the program were awarded an industry-recognized Certificate of Competency. At the conclusion of the ceremony, it was announced that all the graduating participants of the very first ELF cohort will be offered longer term employment, either at Evolve Manufacturing or another Fremont manufacturing company. This first-ever partnership between Industry, academia, workforce boards, and City departments led to the success of this pilot and serves as an excellent model to build a diverse talent pipeline for employers in advanced industries in Fremont and beyond. In this video message, Fremont Mayor Lily Mei shares her "Happy Earth Month" message to the community and introduces a local Fremont student, the City's very own youth commissioner Shreya Ramachandran, making a difference. Also, thank you to Greenkeepers, a student-run nonprofit organization from Fremont, organizing this Saturday’s tree planting at Sabercat Historical Park!
Fremont has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA Community for 2020, making it 24 straight years in a row! This distinction is awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation to cities that place a high importance on caring for the trees in their community. Our trees take care of us by providing benefits such as clean air, clean water, shade, and beauty, so we choose to take care of them! For more information, visit the Arbor Day Foundation website.
