September is National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. While everyone needs to prepare for disasters, we’re putting a special emphasis this year on helping older adults be ready.
Our older community members may be at greater risk from extreme weather events and other potential emergencies, especially if they are living alone, have limited financial resources or have a disability.
Planning ahead is the key to getting through a large-scale emergency with minimal stress and disruption.
-
Get a kit of emergency supplies together. Include items that meet your individual needs, such as medicines, medical supplies, batteries and chargers.
-
Make a plan for how you will contact family members and caregivers, what mode of transportation and routes you will use in case of evacuation and where to reunite with loved ones.
-
Stay informed and know how to get updated information during an emergency. Register your cell phone and email address with SMCAlert the regional emergency mass notification system.
Find a list of what to include in your emergency supply kit, plus more disaster-preparedness resources, check this quick-start Emergency Preparedness Guide.
Emergency Officials Remind Residents to be Prepared
This National Preparedness Month, the County's Department of Emergency Management is reminding the public to be ready for disasters and emergencies by making a plan, building a supply kit, knowing your zone, and signing up for alerts. When disaster strikes, the Department of Emergency Management responds by notifying, coordinating and supporting appropriate agencies within San Mateo County's 20 cities.
With an annual budget of $5.3 million, the Department of Emergency Management also mobilizes resources in times of emergency and develops plans and procedures in response to and recovery from natural & human-caused disasters.
National Emergency Alert Test on Oct. 4 around 11:20 a.m.
A national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert system will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023.
Alerts will be sent out to all cellphones, TV, and Radio at around 11:20 a.m.. This is a TEST.
It will be quite an abrupt sound, and may startle people who are not expecting it. This is not something you can opt out of - however, it may not alert every phone.
That is why FEMA and the FCC are testing it, to see how many phones get reached with this Test Alert.
Please share this with everyone you know so they aren't startled by the alarm, and understand that this is a TEST.

Maintenance Work This Week
Our Street and Traffic Operations got back to crack sealing the list of street segments due for slurry seal next Spring of 2024. The team applied over 7,300 linear feet of crack sealant to Oxford Place and O'Neil Avenue this week.
Why Do We Do This? When we crack seal and repair damaged sections of asphalt ahead of slurry sealing it helps save money on capital improvement projects and allows for more streets to get slurry seal treatment.
Staff continued to replace signs and fill potholes as needed and by request.
This week, residents of Arbor Avenue and East Laurel Creek Road shared their appreciation of our staff for their quick and effective response to fill some annoying potholes in their community. We appreciate all feedback and it is always nice to be acknowledged for a job well done, thank you Belmont.
Staff are already preparing for the rainy season ahead. We have begun building our supply of sandbags and will set out the sandbag stations at City Hall and Barrett Community Center next week for residents.
Ralston and Cipriani Traffic Light
The traffic signal at the intersection of Ralston Avenue and Cipriani Boulevard experienced technical difficulties with vehicle detection Thursday morning and will be operating in recall for now allowing all directions of traffic a preset amount of green light time to keep traffic flowing.
We are working with our vendors on a solution that may have the intersection operational again before rush hour Friday afternoon or early next week at the latest.
Thank you for your patience during this time. If you experience any other traffic signal delays, please share this information with Public Works (pworks@belmont.gov or 650-595-7425) with date, location and time.
