September is National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. While everyone needs to prepare for disasters, we’re putting a special emphasis this year on helping older adults be ready.
Our older community members may be at greater risk from extreme weather events and other potential emergencies, especially if they are living alone, have limited financial resources or have a disability.
Planning ahead is the key to getting through a large-scale emergency with minimal stress and disruption.
-
Get a kit of emergency supplies together. Include items that meet your individual needs, such as medicines, medical supplies, batteries and chargers.
-
Make a plan for how you will contact family members and caregivers, what mode of transportation and routes you will use in case of evacuation and where to reunite with loved ones.
-
Stay informed and know how to get updated information during an emergency. Register your cell phone and email address with SMCAlert the regional emergency mass notification system.
Find a list of what to include in your emergency supply kit, plus more disaster-preparedness resources, check this quick-start Emergency Preparedness Guide.
Emergency Officials Remind Residents to be Prepared
This National Preparedness Month, the County's Department of Emergency Management is reminding the public to be ready for disasters and emergencies by making a plan, building a supply kit, knowing your zone, and signing up for alerts. When disaster strikes, the Department of Emergency Management responds by notifying, coordinating and supporting appropriate agencies within San Mateo County's 20 cities.
With an annual budget of $5.3 million, the Department of Emergency Management also mobilizes resources in times of emergency and develops plans and procedures in response to and recovery from natural & human-caused disasters.
National Emergency Alert Test on Oct. 4 around 11:20 a.m.
A national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert system will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023.
Alerts will be sent out to all cellphones, TV, and Radio at around 11:20 a.m.. This is a TEST.
It will be quite an abrupt sound, and may startle people who are not expecting it. This is not something you can opt out of - however, it may not alert every phone.
That is why FEMA and the FCC are testing it, to see how many phones get reached with this Test Alert.
Please share this with everyone you know so they aren't startled by the alarm, and understand that this is a TEST.

Maintenance Work This Week
This week, our Public Works Street & Traffic Operations improved street sign visibility by trimming overgrown vegetation around stop, street, and other signs on Alameda de las Pulgas and throughout the city. Staff also repaired many wooden barriers around trails and right of ways.
Staff repaired a depression in the roadway on Hiller near Roxbury by replacing 1.5 tons of asphalt at the site; just in time before the area is slurry sealed by a contractor this week.
Staff also finished the asphalt over a completed PGE project trench in Twin Pines in cooperation with the Parks Department.
Staff were then able to use leftover hot asphalt to patch up some deteriorated areas of pavement on E Street to help hold it over until 2025 when it is tentatively scheduled for rehabilitation.
We are continuing to keep a watchful eye on our traffic signals and only seem to have trouble with Ralston at Cipriani currently.
We are continuing to work with our vendors to get this intersection running smoothly again, thank you for your patience on this matter.
Please continue to share if you experience any traffic signal delays with Public Works (pworks@belmont.gov or 650-595-7425) by date, location and time.
