June 11, 2021
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I have an apology and a call for action that needs your attention.
First, we apologize to all active-duty and retired armed forces personnel and their families – especially those Gold Star families who've lost loved ones in the service to our Nation. In years past, the City has held an in-person Memorial Day Ceremony. There was an expectation that the City would hold a ceremony this year. While the current Health Order prevented the City from hosting a large gathering like 2019, we failed to creatively adapt our program to accommodate an in-person event. Instead, we opted just to repeat the online recognition we did last year. As the leader of this organization, I take full responsibility for this decision – it was a mistake. We will learn from it and do better next time.
There is a silver lining, though. Due to the hard work of American Canyon Troop Support, Vallejo VFW Post 1123, Napa American Legion Post 113, Boy Scout Troop 7062, and Cub Scout Troop 7178, many Gold Star families, various community leaders, and community members were able to participate in a community-led, in-person ceremony after all. By all accounts, it was a magnificent event, and two things are now abundantly clear. First, this community is ready to emerge from its pandemic hibernation. Secondly, our community groups are quite capable of leading important community events even without City involvement. That's how it should be – community groups are the best "builders of community." The City will continue to take steps to ensure they are at the forefront of future community events.
Next, we need your help. This drought is no joke. This time is different, and there are many tools to help you be part of the solution. The first step is to sign-up on our new website so you can get a live look at your water meter. In years past, it would take several weeks before your utility bill would confirm your water usage. Now, this website will tell you how much water you used one hour ago. You can't be part of the solution unless you are informed - please sign up for this website today. As a bonus, all American Canyon water customers who sign-up by 5pm on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a gift card to Mid-City Nursery for some fabulous native, drought-tolerant plants. Also, we still have great water conservation programs that can help make you part of the solution. We will literally pay you hundreds of dollars to replace your old toilet and thirsty lawn – it's fun and easy to do; why not sign up today?
Respectfully,
Jason Holley City Manager
