School is starting for most of Alameda's students on Monday, August 11! Please take extra cautions on the roadway as our children and youth make their way to class. This update contains:
This week the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD) is placing new signs instructing bicyclists to dismount and walk their bikes while crossing the Wooden Bridge that connects the Bay Farm Bicycle Bridge to the Bay Trail. This precaution is due to uneven decking on the bridge. EBRPD, which maintains this bridge, recently made some minor improvements to the decking. They have determined that the bridge is nearing the end of its useful life, with the timeline accelerating due to higher King Tides in recent years.
The City is coordinating with EBRPD to make the best use of the existing bridge while the City studies future access alignments. In the meantime, the City joins EBRPD in urging riders to walk bikes and take precautions when traveling on the bridge. For questions about bridge maintenance, reach out to EBRPD.
Construction is underway for major safety improvements on Central Ave from Main St to Sherman St, as well as Grand St from Shore Line Dr to Otis Dr. Both of these corridors front schools and will provide students with safer walking and biking infrastructure including two-way protected cycle-tracks, and pedestrian crossing and bus stop improvements. The City recently sent out Central Ave project updates and roundabout updates that include more details. More information is also available on the project web pages:
Follow the tips below for safe travel on school days. You can also find suggested walking/biking routes to schools, links to AC Transit school bus service, and safety tips for driving to school here:

Reminder that AC Transit will launch its new bus network on August 10, just before school starts. AC Transit is not planning changes to its three routes that serve Alameda middle and high schools, Line 631 , Line 663, and Line 687. However, students who use regular bus routes should review changes to the bus network.
