AC Transit has announced that after two years of planning and outreach, they will implement the new Realign bus service network starting August 10. In Alameda, the changes include increased service to Alameda Point and the West End, and a new direct ride to the Chabot Space & Science Center within Oakland's Redwood Regional Park. Changes also include reductions in transbay service as well as the elimination of direct service from Alameda to the Oakland Airport due to extremely low ridership. This update contains:
There will be no changes to Alameda’s trunk line, 51A. Changes for Alameda service include:
-
Line 19. This hourly service will be extended to serve Alameda Point in a loop that brings bus service to Willie Stargell Ave and Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway.
-
Line 20. Renamed Line 30, but with no route changes.
-
Line 21. Renamed/replaced by Line 31. This line will continue to serve the Harbor Bay Ferry Terminal, but it will no longer travel to the Oakland Airport due to low ridership. It will now provide direct service to the Chabot Space & Science Center in Redwood Regional Park, Oakland.
-
Line 96. No changes in Alameda. Service in Oakland will be extended to Brooklyn Basin.
-
Line O. Weekday service will continue as is, but weekend service will reduce to hourly.
-
Lines OX and W. Line W will be rerouted to serve Bay Farm Island and will replace parts of Line OX, which will be eliminated.

You may be wondering why Lines 20 and 21 are being renamed to Lines 30 and 31. Line 21 got a new name because it has new end points, and Line 20 was renamed to match. The two lines are coordinated: each one comes every 30 minutes, but they are scheduled so that, together, they provide 15-minute service along Park St to Fruitvale BART.
AC Transit is a regional transit agency serving Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Its Realign project conducted a comprehensive review of all bus lines and schedules following the pandemic to address ongoing bus operator shortages, budget constraints, and an analysis of the equity, efficiency, and reliability of its bus service.
On July 1, 2025, AC Transit implemented a modest fare increase to help offset costs after the end of temporary pandemic relief funds, with public transit agencies across the Bay Area grappling with major financial challenges. Another fare increase is planned in July 2026.
People with low incomes, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities are eligible for significant discounts on AC Transit, BART, SF Bay Ferry, and other regional transit.
