Food as Medicine: Community, Healing & Resilience”, produced by Bay Area Green Tours with grant funding from StopWaste, provides a glimpse into the parallel issues of food waste and food insecurity, and how these issues overlap with our community and community members’ health and wellbeing. “Food prescription" Bill Strategy Shifts to the State Budget
Despite winning unanimous and bipartisan support in the Assembly Health Committee Assembly Bill 368, Food Prescriptions was held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. But the fight is not over! The strategy has shifted to including the budget request to fund the pilot program in the state budget. The budget request was submitted to the Assembly Budget Committee in February by bill authors Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes (D- San Bernardino) and former Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D – Alameda).

This program is aimed at providing unpaid rent and utilities dating back as far as March 13, 2020, the date of the federal COVID-19 emergency declaration. Nutrition Training Videos
Dozens of amazing food entrepreneurs in our community have been pitching in to help produce healthy, prepared meals for families in our community. To support these food entrepreneurs, we have developed an assortment of nutrition standards training videos revolving around the diverse cultures in our community! The ALL IN Eats Nutrition Standards provide guidelines on proportions of healthy veggies, proteins, starchy carbohydrates, and fats. What’s new and different about our nutrition training is that we’re expanding resources to incorporate and celebrate the cultures and their cuisines in our community.

Emerald Cities Collaborative is hiring a Program Director to help implement the ARC program in collaboration with our Health Care Without Harm partners. The role is to effectively develop and manage the ARC coalition and its programs, its governing body including its executive/steering committee, and project-specific workgroups co-chaired and represented by community partners. The director will help ensure that local infrastructure investments lead to both job quality and job access, and that there are strong labor and community standards to support this.

Invitation: Zero Food Waste Forum Webinar Series
Senate Bill 1383 requires jurisdictions to ensure that Tier 1 and Tier 2 generators are recovering surplus food for human consumption. Some communities have had success working with staff from their County Departments of Environmental Health to support outreach to the targeted food generating businesses. This is a conversation with the representatives from the California Conference of Directors of Environmental Health and Accela, the cloud-based software company that serves 50 of California’s health departments. You will hear their current plans and capabilities. They will also discuss different models for cooperation with our health inspectors.
