October

October 15, 2025 - Vol. 1, Iss. 4

From the Director's Desk

Happy fall, y’all! As we move into October here in Arizona, we may not see the traditional East Coast fall colors, but we all know what to look forward to — the promise of cooler temperatures (fingers crossed), longer evenings outdoors, and a season packed with opportunities to connect, play, and recharge. Whether you're prepping for the Tour de Tucson, joining us for a community center class, or simply enjoying a family picnic in the park, this season brings a renewed energy to get outside, reconnect, and recharge.

We’re proud to share that this month marks the beginning of an exciting season full of programs and Halloween events designed for all ages. From youth and adult sports leagues to arts and crafts workshops, there truly is something for everyone on the horizon. Keep an eye on our Parks and Recreation calendar for events near you.

I’m also thrilled to highlight a significant achievement within our department: the Ajo Community Center has recently been honored with the 2025 Arizona Parks and Recreation Association “Best Youth Sports Program” award. This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and spirit of collaboration that define the Ajo team. Their efforts have created a welcoming and dynamic space that continues to enrich lives and strengthen community bonds. Please join me in congratulating the staff, volunteers, and patrons who make the Ajo Community Center such a shining example of what’s possible when we invest in people and place.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for our parks and recreation programs. We look forward to seeing you out and about this fall season!

Victor Pereira
Director, Pima County Parks and Recreation

Ajo Youth Sports Honored with Youth Sports Award from APRA

Ajo Awards

Ajo Youth Sports received the Youth Sports Award from the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA) during the annual conference in August. Representing the program at the event were Jack Haney (second from left), Erich Ecker (middle), and DJ Rindon (second from right).

Operated by Pima County Parks and Recreation, Ajo Youth Sports serves the remote community of Ajo, the only organized athletic program for youth ages 4 to 14 within a 50-mile radius. Offering 17 different sports and engaging more than 400 youth annually, the program continues to make a lasting impact on young athletes and their families.

WildGats Partner withSoutheast Regional Park Shooting Range to Promote Firearm Safety

The University of Arizona’s WildGats Shooting Team has turned a decade-old grant into a thriving community partnership promoting firearm safety and education. Twice a year, the team hosts First Shots events at Pima County’s Southeast Regional Park Shooting Range, offering free hands-on instruction for new shooters.

Led by Coach Bill Perkins, the program introduces 80–120 participants per event to safe firearm handling through classroom sessions, laser training, and one-on-one coaching at the range. Supported by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Pima County Parks & Recreation, the initiative helps community members, from curious beginners to lifelong learners, gain confidence and respect for firearm safety while giving student-athletes a meaningful way to give back.

Rediscovering Leisure Times (1987)

We’re turning back the pages to the November 1987 edition of Leisure Times, when Director Gene Laos shared holiday cheer and invited the community to enjoy Pima County’s growing parks system.

This issue spotlighted Dennis Weaver Park, once newly equipped with athletic fields, playgrounds, and a pool shared with Amphitheater School District, and celebrated its role as a bustling hub for local sports and family fun. It also recognized Ted Walker, a beloved figure in Pima County Parks and Recreation, who received a statewide award honoring his decades of dedication to parks, recreation, and community building.

A true glimpse into our department’s proud history of connection and service!

Parks Crew Receives “We Are Gems” Recognition

Parks GEMS

Congratulations to our Team Gem honorees Dario Burruel, Charles Kilcrease, Paul Morrison, Octavio Flores, and George Torres!

The We A.R.E. GEMS Employee Recognition Program celebrates individuals and teams who go above and beyond while exemplifying our core values; Accountable, Respectful, and Ethical. This team truly shines!

This outstanding crew spent four days in Ajo redesigning a maintenance facility with impressive efficiency and skill.

Over time, the park compound at E.S. Bud Walker Park had expanded to meet growing needs, but lacked proper shade to protect valuable maintenance equipment. That’s when this talented team stepped up, traveling to Ajo to make major improvements, including creating a new service entrance gate, repositioning storage containers, fabricating and installing a corrugated metal roof, and more.

Their teamwork and craftsmanship have made the facility safer, more functional, and better equipped for the future.
