JULY - OCTOBER 2025
Each quarter, the Parks and Recreation Department honors a team member who not only lives the Pima County Core Values-Accountable, Respectful, and Ethical-but also demonstrates exceptional performance that goes beyond their day-to-day responsibilities.
This quarter, we would like to formally congratulate Mr. Martin Gonzales, Park Specialist I, as the PR Employee of the Quarter for Jul – Oct 2025.
Marty’s primary job is to oversee all the Park maintenance for the South East Regional Park (clay target center and rifle/pistol range) as well as the Tucson Mountain Park shooting range (rifle/pistol/archery) for a total of seven (7) different geographically separated recreational facilities with two (2) staff.
In addition to maintaining the shooting sports landscape, Marty consistently goes above and beyond the basic requirements of his role. A prime example of his dedication is his work at the Clay Target Center, which relies on complex electronic and hydraulic systems to operate the clay target machines. These machines are notoriously intricate and prone to issues, requiring frequent maintenance and adjustments throughout the day.
Despite having no prior training in these systems, Marty took the initiative to learn how they work so he could independently troubleshoot and maintain them. He even reached out to the manufacturer and system developer to seek additional training and deepen his understanding. Thanks to his efforts, the Clay Target Center remains fully operational, saving taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in potential repair costs and downtime.
Marty also exemplifies outstanding customer service, often stepping outside the boundaries of his job description to support both staff and visitors. For instance, when a SERP employee wanted to enhance the shooting experience at the Action Range, Marty collaborated with the team to develop a plan that included improved targets and a more robust targeting system. He also redesigned the Shooter Shop to create an office space for a team member who previously had none.
His positive attitude extends beyond the team. Marty regularly greets visitors to the range—whether it’s open or closed—offering directions to those who are lost, explaining how things work, clarifying the rules, and following up to ensure a great experience. His willingness to help and engage with others truly sets him apart.
Without a doubt, Marty takes great pride in his work and goes above and beyond his normal day-to-day duties.
Great job Marty!
