TeacherTalk: Spring Edition
Avanti Yamamoto, Virginia Teacher of the Year

VDOE Logo

I hope you either had—or are getting ready for—a restful and relaxing spring break! It’s hard to believe there are only a few months left in the school year. Personally, it’s a bittersweet time. As much as I look forward to summer, I know I’ll truly miss teaching my students. My husband claims that I say this every year—but honestly, I’ve never loved a group of students quite as much as I do this year. We’ve built such a strong classroom community and formed relationships I’ll miss dearly.

April also signals the start of testing season. As we begin reviewing for end-of-course exams, it’s important to remember how much we’re asking of our students. Some will be expected to recall content from the beginning of the year—others, even from years past. Accessing prior knowledge is one of the most challenging tasks for both students and teachers.

This week on Beyond the Bell, I’m sharing strategies to help educators activate that prior knowledge and set students up for success. Whether you’re preparing for the SOL, AP exams, or simply introducing new content, I hope these strategies prove helpful.

Wishing you all a joyful spring and a strong finish to the school year!
In service,
Avanti Yamamoto
