Did You Know?
VDOE is accepting applications for the Hometown Teacher Program. This was formerly known as the Grow Your Own Teacher Pilot Program. It provides grants of $7,500 to low-income high school graduates who meet the specific program's criteria. Each Superintendent’s Region may select up to four applicants to send forward for consideration for initial applications.  Find out  more information about the Hometown Teacher Program today!

Participate in the VKRP Teacher Feedback Survey!
All teachers who participated in the Fall 2023 VKRP assessments or Mid-Year Pilot can provide feedback to the VKRP team. Teachers received a unique link for the survey via their division and program emails on January 16. All teachers who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing in early March to win a $50 gift card.  The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Contact the VKRP team at vkrp@virginia.edu with any questions.

SURN Joy of Literacy & Literature Conference -February 27
Join your peers on the campus of William & Mary for this in-person workshop, Turning Words into Pictures: Using Art to Deepen and Enrich Student Reading, featuring keynotes from two acclaimed authors. Elevate your classroom experience and participate in one or more of these innovative offerings.

VAPSBAN Win, Win, Win: Leveraging Group Contingencies in the Classroom 
The Virginia Public Schools Behavior Analysts Network is hosting a virtual professional development opportunity for behavior specialists, teachers, and other public school educators who support student behavior on February 7 at 3:00-4:30 p.m. Participants will learn evidence based practices that have research to support their effectiveness across a variety of classrooms. There will be collaboration to develop actionable steps that can implement the next day. There is no cost for this event but registration will be limited to the first 285 people.

2024 Chesapeake Bay Climate Institute
The institute focuses on improving geographic literacy, climate data competence, climate literacy and provides hands-on experiences in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The institute is sponsored by the Virginia and Maryland Geographic Alliances. Two options exist on either July 21 -24 or July 24 - 27. Early career, pre-service, and those outside of traditional STEM disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply. The deadline is March 1.   

Multilingual Learners 101 Workshop - March 14, 2024
Join SURN as we explore the basics of teaching students for whom English is a second or other language. This in-person workshop is intended for general and special educators and ESL Teachers grades 1-8. For details and to register, visit SURN.

2024 VGA/ESRI StoryMap Competition
The theme for this year’s map competition is “A significant change to Virginia’s landscape is/has been…”. Webinars will be offered soon to help educators and classes get started with this competition. This is an opportunity to use the 5C's and integrate the new data literacy standards across the curriculum. All content areas welcome to participate. Find out more  information today.

Virginia Literary Awards Adds a New Children’s Literature Award
In partnership with William & Mary Libraries, the Library of Virginia is accepting nominations for a new award honoring excellence in the field of children’s literature with a focus on Virginia. The Children’s Virginia Literary Award will recognize picture books and middle-grade works for reading levels up to age 12. Fiction or nonfiction books by authors with a connection to Virginia and books set in Virginia are eligible for the award. Nominations are due by March 31. Nominations for the Virginia Literary Awards for fiction, nonfiction and poetry are due by March 1.

Save the date: Virginia Military Signing Day Event-May 17
Save the date for this event at the Virginia War Memorial on May 17, from 5-6:30 p.m. This is the fourth year VDOE has participated. Military signing day events aim to replicate the fanfare and attention given to star high school athletes when they sign to compete at Division 1 colleges. School divisions across the Commonwealth are encouraged to consider providing transportation to the ceremony for their honored students. If this is beyond your division’s ability, consider holding a similar local celebration. Divisions who intend to send students to the ceremony should RSVP to Dan Dunham, VDOE Military Students and Families Specialist.


VIRGINIA COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS


M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction
The 100% online and asynchronous M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction program at the University of Virginia provides flexible opportunities to pursue graduate studies, licensure requirements, or professional development to enhance instructional practice. No GRE scores are required, and the degree can be completed in less than 2 years part-time. Choose one of the following areas of emphasis or customize your coursework with courses from among the various areas of emphasis such as  Educational Innovation, ESL, Gifted Ed., Instructional  Technology, Literacy, and more! Register for the January 31 information session at 7 p.m.

Reading Specialist Program
William & Mary offers a MAED program and a post-professional online certificate for teachers who would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. Both programs are fully online, offered in 7-week terms during fall and spring semesters and 5-week terms over summers. New cohorts start in July! For questions, email Dr. Denise Johnson.
