Derby Week schedule changes for Metro facilities

The following facilities will be closed at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 2 and all day Saturday, May 3 due to Oaks and Derby: Staffed recycling locations Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Hwy.  Central Government Center, 7201 Outer Loop East District Public Works, 595 N Hubbards Ln.  Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Ave. HazBin, 7501 Grade Ln.  For more information about drop-off locations, visit Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMap.

Parkway Village Board meeting

Councilwoman Raymond attended a City of Parkway Village Board of Commissioners meeting recently - thanks to these Parkway Village women for stepping up to lead! Left to right, were Pat Gould, Parkway Village Clerk/Treasurer, Councilwoman Raymond, Mayor Amanda Cain, Commissioner Tabitha Hillman-Burcham, and Commissioner Annie Golemboski.

Parkway Village is a home-ruled city bounded on the west by South Preston Street, on the north by the south side of Clarks Lane, on the south by Packard Avenue, and on the east by an imaginary line near Parklawn Drive, east of Alexander Avenue. At left, Josie listened along with Mary Rose Evans, Parkway Village resident and past Mayor.

Community cleanup time! 

Councilwoman Raymond and kiddos joined in the annual Audubon Park cleanup along Preston Highway. The massive stone gateway there is one of three original entrances to Audubon Park. Another was at Oriole at Hess Lane, and one at Poplar Level Road was demolished during the widening of that street in the 1960's.

Thank you to this group of volunteers from Starbucks spreading much and removing litter in CZTMP a few weeks back. The group is led by Store Manager Kyle Partin, seen above in the middle of the group. We also welcome Heather Ziebell, a new Starbucks employee who recently relocated from Wisconsin, seen picking up litter. Another group of Starbucks volunteers planted the beautiful tulips last fall and we’re told they will be back to plant more in the fall. .

Rain was not a problem at the St. Stephen Martyr School Walkathon! Councilwoman Raymond was happy to sponsor the event, and glad to visit with Father Peter, the Cardinal, and kindergartener Mabel!

Friends of the Louisville Zoo announces 2025 event season

Friends of the Louisville Zoo (FOZ) is planning a year of fundraising and fun with the return of their annual gala, Zoofari, and a new treat for adults this fall, Skelebration! Louisville Zoo’s premier gala, Zoofari, coordinated and hosted by the FOZ Board, brings together community leaders and Zoo advocates for an event as unique and special as the Zoo! This year’s “Evening of Elegance” gala will occur on Friday, June 13, and will celebrate the snow leopard. Zoofari guests will be whisked away from the entrance of the Zoo for an exclusive evening of animal encounters, an elevated cocktail hour on the Snow Leopard Pass plaza, live and silent auctions, and an inspired dinner experience and entertainment. The fun continues with an exciting after-party featuring live music by Best Kept Secret, late-night bites and more! Get your Zoofari tickets!  New this year, FOZ will debut Skelebration on Wednesday, October 8. LIHEAP Spring Subsidy Cooling enrollment continues through May 30

Kentucky households may qualify for a one-time electric benefit through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Spring Subsidy Cooling Component. Applications will be accepted until May 30 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring Subsidy is designed to help households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines offset their cooling costs. It provides a one-time electric benefit, which is paid directly to the household’s electricity vendor.

Jefferson County residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. This toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at the time of application:

• Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
• Proof of income from the preceding month for all household members.
• Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord (if electric is included in your rent), or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program.
• The account number and name on the account for your electric bill.

Spring Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice, a past due bill, or eviction notice. The Subsidy benefit can be applied as a credit on your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.

Keep reporting those potholes! 

PW crews will be popping up in their brightly colored safety vests to continue patching potholes. 1. Report online. An online map shows the current status of reports to Public Works.  2. Use X (Twitter) to send the location of the hole to @LouMetro311 and include the hashtag #502pothole. 3. Call Metro311 or 574-5000 to report potholes or any other issues.

Louisville Nature Center 

While the Spring Beginner Birding program on May 10 is sold out, the Louisville Nature Center is always open for a walk, and more programs are on the way: 

Nocturnal Garden Observation (ADA accessible) June 8 and June 22, 8:30 to 10 p.m. $15.  As the heat of the summer day fades with the setting sun, a whole world comes alive in the cooler nights. From the loud, musical echoes of the Gray tree frogs to the hooting of owls, there is much to see and hear. Join our naturalist, Luke, for a night of observation in our sensory garden. This program is ADA accessible. The terrain is paved and flat. Participants will go on a leisurely stroll around the garden, remaining mostly seated to take in the sights and sounds.

Night Hike June 11, 8 to 10 p.m. $15. Owls, whippoorwills, bats OH MY! Join Luke on this guided hike to admire and identify sounds of the night. The sun will set approximately 9:06 p.m.

May 17 - 33rd Annual Turtle Derby 

Attend the “Slowest Two Minutes in Sports” for a great cause

Councilwoman Raymond invites the community to come out and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon at the 33rd Annual Turtle Derby on Saturday, May 17. This beloved event will feature a giant turtle wheel of chance, games of chance, raffles, fried chicken dinners, and more all to benefit a meaningful cause. Hosted by the Little Sisters of the Poor, the Turtle Derby raises critical funds to support the elderly residents of St. Joseph’s Home. There are several ways to get involved today: Fill the Cart: Donate non-perishable groceries for the cart located in the lobby of St. Joseph’s Home. The fully stocked cart will be auctioned off on the Wheel of Chance. Contribute to Children’s Games: Drop off new toys to be used as prizes at the children’s booths. Stock Beverages: Donate individual soft drinks or bottled water for the Sisters to sell during the event. Bake a Cake: Bring a homemade cake for the Cake Wheel. The amendments proposed to the LDC introduce three (3) new land uses to be defined and regulated, including Day Shelters, Accessory Overnight Shelters for active Religious Building & Grounds, and Extreme Weather Shelters, and provides the standards under which each of these uses may be allowed and in what zoning districts across Louisville Metro.

Locate legal Short Term Rentals with Metro's interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit).
