Note from Josie

It's time to start thinking about the city budget. Louisville's Mayor and Metro Council write the city budget of around $1 billion every year. Departments have been working on their budget requests for months and Mayor Greenberg will make a budget address laying out his priorities to council on Thursday, April 24. You can watch that on MetroTV.

Then budget hearings begin at City Hall, as agencies and organizations testify about what they'd like to see in the budget. Those will be on MetroTV and the public is welcome to sit in on them in chambers.

The Metro Council will vote on a final budget on Thursday, June 26. Generally the final budget hews closely to the Mayor's proposed budget, with some adjustments and council priorities.

Now is the time to tell me, and other elected people, what you want to see Louisville invest in. Whether it's investments in libraries or parks, public safety or public art, the best time to advocate is right now.

I'll keep you abreast of the budget process over the next few months. Please feel free to send questions as we go.

Weather warnings, delays, postponements

Flooding is predicted. Remember, turn around, don't drown, as many flooding deaths happen in motor vehicles.

The Department of Public Works Solid Waste Management Services has been working to determine the best response to the recent storm damage that occurred late Sunday and last night. While the typical plan would have opened collection sites across Louisville Metro today, the predicted severe weather and flooding will delay this plan. In the absence of any additional damage and/or major flooding that changes things we plan to open debris drop off sites across Louisville Metro next Monday April 7.

The Pop-Up Drop-Off event scheduled for Saturday has been postponed.

The event for elephants Mikki and Punch, who will be leaving the Louisville Zoo for The Elephant Sanctuary, has been delayed to April 19 and 20.
