Fan Fair Giveaway providing free electric fans to seniors and people with disabilities on June 11

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, community organizations, and residents, hundreds of electric fans have been donated and collected to provide heat relief for seniors and people with disabilities.  A "Fan Fair" Giveaway and Resource event is scheduled for Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Edison Center, 701 W. Ormsby Avenue.

Fans will be available at no cost for seniors 60 and older, as well as for individuals with documented, physical disabilities, on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Fan Fair qualifications and guidelines are as follows:

• Person 60 years or older
• Or documentation verified by a physician of a physical disability
• Resident of Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble or Bullitt Counties
• Proof of address and age
• ​One fan per household

A Prescription Drug Toss & Resource Fair will coincide with the fan giveaway event to provide basic information from local resources. Participating vendors include AARP, JenCare, Kentuckiana Regional Planning & Development Agency (KIPDA), Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS), Anthem Kentucky Medicaid & Medicare, Senior Medicare Patrol and several other community organizations.

The Louisville Metro Police Department will also be educating and collecting prescription drugs to properly and safely dispose of unwanted or expired prescription drugs in the home.

Fan Fair is sponsored by KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living and Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC).  These organizations first joined forces in 2016 to implement a fan drive and the start of an annual Fan Fair Giveaway event in response to the numerous calls they received requesting heat relief.

This year’s fan collection will end June 9. Drop-off donations of new box fans can be made Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at one of the following: KIPDA, 11520 Commonwealth Drive, OADC, Edison Center, 701 W. Ormsby Avenue., 2nd Floor, and WLKY Studio, 1918 Mellwood Avenue. Monetary donations either online or via check are also appreciated. More information can be found at louisvilleky.gov/fanfair.

LMPD impound lot offering third amnesty period through tomorrow

Louisville Metro Police's third amnesty period on the city’s tow lot is underway in an effort to reduce the number of vehicles inside.

The amnesty period runs through June 3. During this period, all towing and storage fees will be waived for individuals picking up vehicles from within the tow lot.

Metro Council partnered with city leaders to create an amnesty ordinance to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles on roadways by reducing crowding at the city’s Tow Lot, according to a release from LMPD.

The ordinance allows Metro Public Works’ director to create an amnesty period and eliminate a financial barrier that could contribute to the lot’s overcrowding.

The public is invited to participate in the budget process and share their thoughts through an online form for written comments. Hikes Lane Rehabilitation project underway

The map above shows the Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project Phase 2 construction zone in orange, buffer zone in green, and travel lanes in blue. 

The Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project is underway. The federally funded project mostly includes repairing/replacing concrete pavement, improving curb ramps and sidewalks to make them ADA compliant. Work on the 2.7-mile corridor is anticipated to be completed by late October. 

Phase 2, which includes closing the south two lanes and detouring eastbound traffic on Hikes Lane, is anticipated to remain in place until the end of next week, June 9.

Phase 3, which includes weekend work at the Hikes Lane and Breckinridge Lane intersection, is planned to start immediately after, June 9 to 11.

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division offering free  ‘Mulch Mondays’ 

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division has launched a new program called ‘Mulch Mondays.' Any Jefferson County resident or nonprofit organization will be able to pick up natural, dye-free mulch at no cost between 1 and 3 p.m. every Monday in the parking lot directly behind 9200 Whipps Mill Road.

Those interested in picking up free mulch are required to bring their own container for transport. Participants will be required to fill out a waiver before receiving mulch.

The Preston Area Business Alliance (PABA) is seeking a part-time executive director. PABA is a network of business owners and community leaders dedicated to advancing business through enhanced connection, understanding, and action. Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC

Sidewalk over Goldsmith Lane bridge near Peabody Lane closed due to safety concerns

The sidewalk over the bridge structure on Goldsmith Lane near Peabody is closed until further notice. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspection revealed safety concerns and closing the sidewalk will allow the driving lanes to remain open at this time.  The next steps will be to investigate and design a repair or replacement of the structure. Please watch for signage and use extra caution in the area.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

June 2 and 3 - Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival 

While Germantown is now in D-15, we're for hearing live blues music for a good cause! On Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3, the Kentuckiana Blues Society and Check's Cafe will host the twelfth Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival at the corner of Hickory Street and Burnett Avenue. The street festival with an outdoor stage will have four acts on Friday and six acts on Saturday. Admission is free and a portion of the proceeds will be donated toThe Academy of Music Production Education and Development (AMPED).

June 22 to 24 - Holy Family Picnic 

Picnic Fans! Please come out and join us for fun, fellowship, and food at the annual Holy Family Summer Picnic.

The picnic will be held on Friday, June 23 from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday June 24 from 5 p.m. to midnight. We have also added a Thirsty Thursday to our picnic events. Adults are welcome to come out on Thursday, June 22 from 6 to 10 p.m. for an evening of beer, music, pulltabs, and food.

Our regular picnic attractions will all be available on Friday and Saturday including booths, gambling of all kinds, and plenty of varieties of food. Our famous fried chicken dinner will also be available on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. and ending when we run out of chicken. So, come early and stay late! Join us all three days for a fun-filled weekend that supports all of the good works at Holy Family. All are welcome!

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred on or after January 20, 2020. Eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply are available online FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance and through FEMA's dedicated helpline at 1-844-684-6333.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. LMPD - which numbers to call for emergencies, non-emergencies, and ongoing criminal activity complaints

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

 Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County.  Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans. "Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.
