Incident Command: North Idaho Type 3 Incident Management Team, Mike McManus, I.C.

(Coeur d’Alene, Idaho- 7/1/25) – The Nettleton Gulch Fire is at 38 acres and currently 0% contained, the increase in acreage is due to better mapping of the footprint of the fire. There are no evacuations or structures at risk. Today, IDL’s Mica Fire Protection District transitioned operations to the North Idaho Type 3 Incident Management Team.

Crews were able to complete handline around the fire yesterday. Today, they will continue installing hose lays and setting up access to water for the fire perimeter to work toward containment.  The fire is burning through steep terrain in timber fuels. Safety remains a top priority for the crews, with an abundance of snags on site, as well as the possibility of rolling logs and falling rocks.  Four falling modules will be on site today to mitigate the snag hazards.

Today there will be five engines, two water tenders, two 20-person hand crews, and one hotshot crew. Two Type1 helicopters and one Type2 helicopter will be assisting with waterdrops throughout the day.  Interagency partners, including county, city, state, and federal resources, have been critical to the fire suppression response.

Our priority continues to be public and firefighter safety. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place and remains in effect over the Canfield Mountain area. Unauthorized drones and aircraft pose a serious hazard to firefighting and law enforcement activities. If you fly, we can’t.

The fire is on Forest Service land and under IDL protection. All Forest Service lands, roads, and trails west of Fernan Road (FSR 268), all FS lands, roads, and trails west of FSR 1525 and south of Yellow Banks Creek, and all FS lands roads, and trails south of Hayden Lake are closed for firefighter safety and access.  The closure does not include FSR 268 or 1535.

The Nettleton Gulch fire was reported on June 29, 2025, at approximately 1:20 p.m. near the popular recreation area, Canfield Mountain, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. All wildfires under IDL protection are investigated.

There is a law enforcement incident investigation happening at the fire’s location. All questions regarding the law enforcement investigation should be directed to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department. Their contact is Lt. Mark Ellis, PIO cell: 208-758-1045, email: sopio@kcgov.us.
