From Summit to Shore: Celebrating Tahoe’s Champions

Cindy

This past month, I had the privilege of attending two deeply meaningful events that celebrate both Lake Tahoe’s beauty and the people who have worked tirelessly to protect it.

The 29th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit, held at Valhalla Tahoe, brought together leaders from every level - federal, state, local, Tribal, nonprofit, and private partners, around our shared commitment to safeguarding this national treasure. This year’s theme, Protecting Lake Tahoe: Balancing Sustainable Recreation and Conservation, served as a reminder that while Tahoe’s beauty draws visitors from around the world, we must balance access with the stewardship that ensures its preservation for future generations.

It was inspiring to hear from so many dedicated voices, including keynote speaker Jeremy Renner, who called on all of us to lead with unity in protecting Tahoe. I was especially honored to participate in the presentation of the Dianne Feinstein Lake Tahoe Award to Clem Shute for his decades of leadership and unwavering dedication to the lake. The Summit, first envisioned in 1997 by Senators Feinstein and Harry Reid, has grown into one of the most successful models of bipartisan environmental collaboration in the country.

The following day, I was honored to speak at the dedication of the Dianne Feinstein West Shore Tahoe Trail. This 12-mile stretch from Tahoe City to Meeks Bay is now a lasting tribute to a woman whose vision and advocacy shaped so much of Tahoe’s environmental progress. Senator Feinstein believed in connecting communities through accessible recreation, while protecting the natural beauty that makes this place so special.

Her granddaughter, Eileen Mariano, shared personal stories that captured her grandmother’s spirit, including the now-legendary tale of biking around Tahoe on a brakeless bike. While the story brought laughter to the crowd, it also reminded us of the joy and passion Senator Feinstein felt for this region.

Standing at both events, I was struck by how intertwined our environmental work and our community’s heart truly are. From the collaborative spirit of the Summit to the joyful dedication of a trail that will be enjoyed for generations, each moment reminded me that Tahoe’s future rests in all of our hands. Together, through shared effort and shared love for this place, we can honor the vision of those who came before us and ensure Lake Tahoe remains as breathtaking tomorrow as it is today.

SUPPORTING TAHOE BUSINESSES DURING SUMMER CONSTRUCTION

Support local business

We know summer road construction can be frustrating, but these projects are critical to improving roads, bridges, broadband, and water systems for the future. This season, after hearing concerns from North Tahoe business owners about construction impacts, our office worked closely with Caltrans and community partners to quickly implement changes that reduce disruptions during the busiest time of year. As a result, cones blocking critical parking were removed, summer construction in Tahoe City will now occur at night through August, and any daytime work has been postponed until after Labor Day. These changes are already helping ease impacts, and every local business, restaurant, and recreation provider remains open and ready to welcome you. Your support during construction helps keep our community strong! READ MORE

FANNY BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT MOVES FORWARD

Fanny Bridge

Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City officially closed Aug. 11 for a 12-week demolition and rebuild, with reopening planned for Nov. 3. All traffic is being detoured via the state Route 89 Bypass, while pedestrians can cross using the Lake Tahoe Dam walkway. The new single-span bridge will include sidewalks, bike lanes, and a historic-style rail, improving safety and accessibility. Businesses in the area remain open during construction. LEARN MORE

GREEN WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS

Green Waste

Placer County offers several ways to dispose of green waste like branches, pine needles, and leaves to support wildfire prevention and defensible space. Residents can use the year-round drop-off at the Eastern Regional Materials Recovery Facility, participate in free summer drop-off events, or take advantage of the green waste punch card program through Oct. 31 for up to six cubic yards of free disposal. Larger projects can be handled with rental dumpsters or local fire district chipper programs. We’re also gathering feedback on potential new collection options through the Tahoe Green Waste Disposal Survey, open until mid-August. LEARN MORE
