CALTRANS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Supporting Tahoe Businesses During Summer Construction
This summer, many Tahoe City business owners contacted our office with urgent concerns about how Caltrans’ road construction was disrupting parking, customer access, and economic activity during the busiest season of the year. We took those concerns very seriously and worked with North Tahoe Community Alliance (NTCA) to bring together Caltrans officials, Tahoe City Downtown Association, NTCA, Placer County and Assemblymember Hadwick’s office. Our joint intent was to convey to the State our concerns for the community’s health and well-being and hope to convince them to modify the timing to reduce the impacts. We were pleased that Caltrans officials moved quickly to address our concerns.
As a direct result of this effort:
Cones blocking critical parking in Tahoe City were removed immediately, restoring access for customers.
Remaining summer construction in Tahoe City will now occur at night only through the end of August.
Any daytime work will be delayed until after Labor Day to avoid peak-season impacts.
The Wye project will be paused until the Fanny Bridge project is completed, preventing multiple disruptions at once.
These immediate changes are already easing the strain on local businesses and residents during the height of summer.
We also pressed for better long-term coordination and communication so future projects don’t create the same challenges. Caltrans confirmed that each project undergoes an environmental review process that includes a public comment period. Our office will be closely monitoring these reviews to identify potential impacts early and to make sure the community has a clear opportunity to weigh in before work begins.
We appreciate the collaboration of NTCA and other partners in helping to communicate the concerns of our business community and in working toward solutions. Most of all, thank you to the business owners and residents who spoke up, your input was essential in achieving these results. Our office remains committed to ensuring that necessary infrastructure improvements are balanced with the vitality of our local economy.
In service, Cindy Gustafson Placer County Supervisor, District 5
