WGFD - Volunteer with Wyoming Game and Fish

Lander - On Saturday, February 7, volunteers are invited to help create structures for fish habitat on Ocean Lake, near Pavillion. This project is a partnership between Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Fremont County Solid Waste Disposal District and Inberg-Miller Engineering, and it provides an opportunity to recycle Christmas trees while improving the structure of the lake.

Once there, volunteers and staff members will wire the trees together and attach cinder blocks as weights. The resulting formation creates the inland equivalent of an artificial reef. When the ice melts, the weighted trees will sink, providing structure for fish and improving the overall lake health.

According to Lander Region Fisheries Supervisor, Kevin Johnson, “Over the years, volunteers have been essential to the success of this project. We would love to see even more volunteers this year, and encourage the community to come out, enjoy the day, bring the family and help increase fish habitat at Ocean Lake.”

Volunteers should meet at the boat landing on Long Point of Ocean Lake at 8:00 am, and bring pliers or wire cutters, work gloves and warm clothes. Volunteers are welcome to show up for any portion of the time and, the project should be completed early afternoon.
