Brood culls stocked in Sloans, Absarraca lakes

LARAMIE –The Wyoming Game and Fish Department stocked about 900 brood cull brown and brook trout in lakes in Cheyenne earlier this week.

Sloans Lake received 390 brown trout and 100 brook trout, and Lake Absarraca received 390 brown trout. The fish were culled from the breeding stock at Story Fish Hatchery. The brook trout are all four-year-old fish and average about 1 pound and about 14 inches. The brown trout are three to five years old and also average a pound each and up to 14 inches in length. However, some of the older fish are about 18 inches in length. 

As breeding stock, the fish produce between 2.5 and 3 million eggs per year. The eggs are shipped to fish hatcheries around the state where they are raised and eventually stocked into public waters. When broodstock fish reach three to five years old they are beyond their peak spawning production and are released into lakes and rivers in the state for anglers to enjoy.

Ice is beginning to form on both lakes but is still unsafe and anglers are urged to use caution.
