Tips for a Safe Summer

Summer is here! With the season comes many fun outdoor activities you can enjoy with your kids.  Here are a few helpful reminders to keep your family safe this summer from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

  • Sun Safetybabies under 6 months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight. Move your baby to the shade under a tree, umbrella or stroller canopy. Dress babes in lightweight clothing that cover the arms and legs and use wide brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn.
  • Sun Safety - babies over 6 months and kids, apply sunscreen with an SPF 15 or greater to areas of your child’s skin that aren’t covered by clothing. When choosing a sunscreen, look for the words “broad-spectrum” on the label and remember it takes 30 minutes to be effective and should be reapplied every two hours. Also, even if it’s cloudy most sun rays can come through the clouds so wear sunscreen even on overcast days.
  • Swimming – never leave children unsupervised in or near a pool. Swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning among children aged 1 to 4 years. Don’t use air-filled or foam toys, such as “water wings” and “noodles” in place of a life jacket. They give both kids and parents a false sense of security.
  • Playground Safety – playgrounds should have safety-tested mats or loose-fill materials such as wood chips. Teach your kids to never stand behind or play around swings when in use. Make sure slides are cool to prevent your child’s legs from getting burned.
  • Insect Bites – to avoid itchy bug bites and insect-related illness keep these things in mind: don’t use scented soaps, perfumes and hair sprays on your child, avoid dressing your child in clothing with bright colors or flowery prints, use insect repellent containing DEET to prevent insect-related illnesses.
  • Allergies – if your child is allergic to outdoor allergens, it can be helpful to use air conditioners when possible. Showering or bathing at the end of the day to remove allergens from the body and hair can also be helpful. For those with grass pollen allergy, they should remain indoors when the grass is mowed and avoid playing in areas with tall grass.
