From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on October 10; Central Wyoming Community College, Riverton; Marzano Data Literacy PD Workshop Day 2
In partnership with Marzano Research, WDE offers an opportunity for educators and leaders to come together in a regional session to explore the pandemic effect on achievement. During these sessions, Marzano Research will build upon the data literacy and 5 Ds process explored in the Day 1 (July 2022) session through application to participant’s own district and school level data. This Day 2 session will guide participants in how to apply the 5Ds process to their own data and support movement toward data-driven decisions that support greater student achievement. This is best done with a team and districts may register multiple teams.
Key concepts in the session will include:
- Understanding the purposes and uses of different types of data.
- Framing questions that data can answer.
- Conducting disciplined analysis that lets the data speak.
- Identifying root cause.
- Using multiple sources of data and evidence to make decisions.
This event will take place on October 10 at Central Wyoming College in Riverton. PTSB credit will be available for participants. Register here.

From 10-11 a.m. on October 11, virtually; Hathaway Scholarship Online Orientation
The WDE’s Hathaway Team will hold online orientations starting at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of every month. The orientation is for those new to the program, or for those who want a content refresher. Legislative updates will be included. Sessions will last about 45 minutes.
At the end of each online session, attendees who are still in the meeting will be entered into a drawing for a “Hathaway Swag Bag.” All district personnel are invited to participate.

From 9 a.m.-noon on October 13 and 20, virtually; Supporting Beginning Teachers
This virtual training will consist of two three-hour sessions from 9 a.m.-noon on October 13 and 20, 2022.
Effectively supporting beginning teachers is crucial for both retention and developing expertise in relation to student achievement. Learn how leaders, coaches, and mentors can support beginning teachers through specific, research-based mentoring strategies that can be applied at the school or district level. Gain an in-depth understanding of the four types of essential support beginning teachers need that make them different from veteran teachers and improve their retention.
Learning outcomes may include:
- Understand the foundational research and theory on supporting beginning teachers.
- Explore how to identify effective mentors, and gain an understanding of how to establish a solid foundation for mentoring.
- Acquire specific strategies to provide essential physical, emotional, and institutional support for beginning teachers.
- Frame essential instructional support strategies within a common language of instruction, including how to engage in goal setting, focused practice, and focused feedback.
- Gain tips for encouraging reflective discussions between beginning teachers and their mentors.

From 3:30 p.m.- 5 p.m. on October 13, virtually; Assessment Literacy for Teachers (Cohort 1)
The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) will engage a cohort of Wyoming educators in discussions about assessment using resources created through a partnership with the National Center for Improvement of Education Assessment. The goals of the assessment literacy training are to challenge and revise misconceptions about assessment, enhance knowledge about assessment, and provide opportunities to practice appropriate and accurate assessment uses. Educators will complete prerecorded modules prior to meeting virtually with WDE staff to engage in assessment discussions.
Virtual sessions will take place on: October 13, 2022; January 11, 2023; May 10, 2023; and September 7, 2023.

From 9 a.m.- noon on October 14, Little America Resort and Hotel, Cheyenne; MTSS: Tier II and Tier III
At Tier II, schools provide small-group, standardized academic interventions, or targeted behavioral or mental health supports, using validated intervention programs to support students identified as at-risk. At Tier III, schools provide intensive and individualized interventions for students not responding to Tier II.
During this training, participants will learn the essential features of Tier II and Tier III interventions, how to evaluate interventions using the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity, and how to ensure fidelity for Tier II and Tier III interventions. Participants will evaluate a Tier II intervention using the Taxonomy of Intervention Intensity, and they will practice an effective teaming process for Tier III supports using standardized tools.

From 4-5 p.m. on October 18, virtually; State Director of Digital Learning and Innovation
CodeHS is partnering with the Wyoming Department of Education to host FREE, in-depth professional development cohorts to prepare Wyoming K-12 teachers to take the Praxis Computer Science Exam. Learn more. The course is delivered within a 14-week cohort model where teachers work through the course at the same pace on the CodeHS platform. During the course, teachers are provided 1:1 support sessions, live Q&As, exam prep sessions, networking opportunities, and more.
To be eligible to apply, you should be a Wyoming K-12 public school teacher preparing to add a computer science endorsement to your teaching license. If you have questions, contact hello@codehs.com.

From 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. October 19; Hilton Garden Inn, Casper: Jan Hoegh Standards Referenced Reporting
As schools develop standards-based learning practices, they shift from a whole-school perspective to an individual student perspective. Staff work to develop an effective system of grading and reporting and closely monitor each learner’s progress using assessment data.
Learning outcomes may include:
- Learn how to establish clear and measurable goals focused on critical needs regarding improving achievement of individual students.
- Learn how to analyze, interpret, and use data to monitor progress toward individual student achievement goals.

From 3:30-4:30 p.m., October 19 virtually; Wyoming MTSS Coaching Institute Community of Practice
The WDE will resume the Coaching Institute for the 2022-23 school year and will hold monthly Community of Practice sessions beginning in September. The purpose of the Coaching Institute will be to provide ongoing support and updates on relevant topics associated with MTSS implementation, as well as technical assistance on our implementation modules (available in September as well).
All virtual sessions will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month. The dates include:

From 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. October 20; Hilton Garden Inn, Casper: Jan Hoegh Standards-Based Learning
Transitioning to a standards-based classroom is a major change but one that is highly beneficial for both teachers and students. Rather than focusing on abstractions and theories, this provides teachers, and those who guide change in their classrooms, with practical, hands-on strategies and advice for shifting to standards-based learning.
Learning outcomes may include:
- Understand the role of standards and proficiency scales in a standards-based classroom.
- Review how to apply standards-based procedures for planning and delivering instruction.
- Learn effective ways for students to set goals and track their progress.
- Discover how to use proficiency scales as the basis of creating and scoring quality classroom assessments.
- Acquire strategies for configuring grades in a thoughtful manner and communicating them effectively.

A follow-up virtual webinar will be available on October 25, 2022 from 3:30-4:45 p.m. for all participants after the in-person training.
From 4-6 p.m. October 20; virtually: SMART Goals
This virtual training will consist of three two-hour sessions from 4-6 p.m. on October 20, November 14, January 19.
Session I:
During this session we’ll focus on how collaborative teams effectively write year-long SMART goals based on their analysis of school data. We’ll also dig into a protocol to create a team action plan to create a road map of strategies members will use to improve student learning.
Session II:
In this session we’ll move away from the year-long view of strategies to look unit by unit at how teams develop and carry out short term SMART goals. We’ll examine how interdependence among team members increases through the use of data from common formative assessments.
Session III:
In this session we’ll examine the role of teacher leaders and coaches in creating and supporting a data rich culture which uses collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for students. We’ll examine roadblocks to this and ways we can overcome them.
