WDE SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON PROPOSED FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS STANDARDS

  • The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is collecting public input on proposed changes to the 2021 Wyoming Fine and Performing Arts Content and Performance Standards at the request of the State Board of Education. The input will be shared with the Board.
  • To provide input, review the 2021 Wyoming Fine and Performing Arts Content and Performance Standards. Written or verbal input can be provided through the following options:
    • Complete the Fine and Performing Arts Standards Public Survey by 11:59 p.m. on November 3, 2021.
    • Attend the virtual Public Input Meeting from 4:30-6 p.m. MST on Monday, October 11, 2021. (click link to Join Zoom Meeting or call in at 346-248-7799 and enter Meeting ID: 972-4048-7034).
    • Attend the virtual Public Input Meeting from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. MST on Thursday, October 14, 2021. (click link to Join Zoom Meeting or call in at 346-248-7799 and enter Meeting ID: 978-3579-4572).
  • The proposed standards provide for 11 standards in five disciplines: dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. The changes were developed by a review committee of 30 members, including educators, business members, community members, and a parent.

UPDATES TO ASSESSMENTS IN MATH AND SCIENCE

New and Updated Standards will be Fully Operational This School Year

  • For the 2021-22 school year, the new Science and updated Math Standards will be fully operational and scored on the WY-TOPP assessments.

POSITIVE SCHOOL CLIMATE GRANT OPPORTUNITY

  • Don’t miss out on Positive School Climate Grant funds. 
  • Applications due October 5, 2021.
  • Initial award announcements will be made in November 2021.

LEADER IN LITERACY AWARD

  • The University of Wyoming Literacy Research Center and Clinic is accepting nominations for the Carol Mead Leader in Literacy Award until October 15, 2021.
  • The award celebrates innovators dedicated to improving literacy in the Cowboy State.
  • Award winners will be announced in November. Details about an award ceremony will be provided. 
  • Recipients will receive a $4,000 award and a plaque recognizing the honor.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN PE

  • The Wyoming Physical Education Teaching Collaborative (WYO PETe) will offer a free, three-part professional development series, Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) in Physical Education.
  • Elite trainer Chris Strater will help you promote student social and emotional self-regulation in your classes, regardless of grade level and content. 
    • November 14-15: SEL in PE: How to begin with SEL (In-person, Casper).
    • From 4-8 p.m. via Zoom on December 15: SEL in PE: Refine your SEL skills.
    • From 4-8 p.m. via Zoom on January 19: SEL in PE: Next steps for your program.

NEUROMUSCULAR TRAINING WORKSHOP

Free One-Hour Workshops for Teachers, October 6 or 27, 2021

  • Learning to properly perform fundamental movement skills can reduce the risk of injury when children participate in physical activities. 
  • Neuromuscular training (NMT) is a type of physical exercise that combines activities like agility, plyometrics, and core stabilization with specialized instructions, cues, and feedback designed to promote proper movement patterns. 
  • NMT has been successfully employed by health professionals around the world to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury, improve motor skill quality, and enhance sports performance among adolescent populations.

NATIVE AMERICAN COLLEGE FAIR

  • The 2021 Native American College Fair allows students to have meaningful conversations with representatives about college life, courses, and admission, and & financial aid requirements. 
  • The website-based virtual college fair will launch October 8, 2021.

SOCIAL STUDIES WEBINAR SERIES

  • InquireED’s free fall webinar series, The Future of Social Studies, begins October 7 with Beyond Polarization: Centering the Practice of Inquiry in Social Studies.
  • Upcoming sessions focus on elementary social studies; integrating literacy and social studies; and culturally responsive education in social studies.

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR HISTORY EDUCATION

March 17-20, 2022, Virtual

  • Now a virtual event, the National Council for History Education (NCHE) has extended the deadline to October 25, 2021, to submit a proposal for the 2022 NCHE conference.
  • Theme: Historical Communities of Promise and Practice.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

  • The Declaration at 250 is a multi-year, broad-based initiative by the Gilder Lehrman Institute to recognize the importance of the Declaration of Independence in the history of America, and of the world. 
  • The initiative will produce resources and programs that explore themes such as the intellectual and cultural origins of the Declaration, its unprecedented nature among traditional forms of government, and the influence of the Declaration on the formation of other countries.
  • Documents, images, self-paced courses, and lesson plans are offered, along with other resources.
