EDUCATOR INPUT ON MATH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is collecting educator input on the proposed Wyoming Math Performance Standards, which students will be assessed on through the district assessment system.
  • Options for providing input:
    • Complete the Math Performance Standards Educator Survey by April 28, 2021.
    • Attend the virtual public input meeting from 4:30–6 p.m. MST on April 22, 2021. (Join

REAGAN INSTITUTE SUMMIT ON EDUCATION

July 22, 2021, Virtual

  • The COVID 19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for our schools, students, educators, and the future of education.
  • The Reagan Institute Summit on Education will bring together members of Congress, higher education administrators and leaders from the U.S. Department of Education and industry to discuss the challenges at a critical time for our leaders and institutions.
  • The institute hosts online panel discussions on key education issues throughout the year. The State of Civics: Wyoming recently featured Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow and 2020 Wyoming Teacher of the Year Dane Weaver of Ten Sleep

SCIENCE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT TASK DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

July 27-29, 2021

  • WDE is offering a free workshop that will support K-12 Wyoming science educators to design classroom science assessment tasks using a principled-design approach. 
  • Register by May 1, 2021, and be notified of acceptance by May 14, 2021.

FREE VIRTUAL CONCERTS

The Wyoming Arts Council, in partnership with the Piatigorsky Foundation, will host a free, virtual classical music concert with a live Q&A to follow with cellist Evan Drachman at a time that is convenient for you.

  • Eight sessions will be provided.
  • First come, first served, so email soon.
  • Program can be adapted to any age group.

FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE INSTITUTE

June 13-July 24, 2021 in Greeley, Colo.

  • The Frontiers of Science Institute for high school students is returning in Summer 2021 bigger and better than before.
  • In addition to the traditional six-week research mentoring program on the University of Northern Colorado campus, a parallel online computer & data science boot camp will be offered. 
  • Parents or guardians will need to sign and upload the permission form.

NASA WEBINAR: GROWING BEYOND EARTH

6 p.m., April 1, 2021, for Rural K-12 Educators

  • NASA partners Growing Beyond Earth and GLOBE Observer will offer a webinar highlighting technologies and practices in experiential learning environments.
  • Educators can access plant-growing equipment that mimics environmental conditions aboard the International Space Station.

PLACE-BASED SCIENCE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

  • Ecology Project International (EPI) has been engaging teachers and students in experiential, place-based science learning since 2000.
  • Please take 10 minutes to complete this survey so EPI can create PD opportunities that will fit your needs.

STEM GAME-DESIGN CHALLENGE

  • As a result of the pandemic, many students are missing opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM experiences with friends and classmates.
  • To help fill this void and encourage learning, computational thinking, and fellowship, Legends of Learning and International Game Developers Association are hosting a free month-long Dell Technologies Advancing Sustainability Game Design Challenge.
  • This virtual experience will enable K-12 students to learn more about game development and practice critical thinking while expanding their portfolios.

  • The CubeSat challenge encourages teachers to start their own CubeSat projects by using the Challenge Resource Hub.

ADDRESSING UNFINISHED LEARNING K-3

  • REL Central offers a webinar exploring the development and rollout of Rocky Mountain PBS’s innovative Colorado Classroom programming, which addresses unfinished learning for students in K-3.
  • Presenters will introduce strategies and resources that participants can use to proactively address unfinished learning in their districts, schools, classrooms, or homes. 
  • Intended audiences:
    • State and local education agency personnel.
    • Teachers.
    • Principals.
    • Curriculum directors.

DOLLAR GENERAL YOUTH LITERACY GRANTS

Application deadline: May 20, 2021

  • Schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations that help students who are below grade level or having trouble reading are eligible to apply.
  • Grant funding is provided to assist in the following areas:
    • Implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs.
    • Purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives.
    • Purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs.
  • Maximum grant amount is $4,000.

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION AND INDIAN ED FOR ALL

June 13-19, 2021 in Billings, Mont.

  • Worlds Apart But Not Strangers is a free in-person, inquiry-based seminar for educators of upper elementary through college students.
  • Participants build background knowledge about the Holocaust and Indian Ed for All and gain writing-based classroom strategies for creating community and processing difficult information.
  • Place-based, learner-centered experiences include:
    • Testimony from Holocaust survivors and their descendants.
    • Tribal experts discussing federal Indian policy, past and present.
    • Visit to Beth Aaron Synagogue.
    • Visit to Northern Cheyenne and Crow lands.

NATIVE AMERICAN LAW SCHOOL

Register by May 3, 2021

  • Arizona State University's Native American Pipeline to Law Pre-Law Programs help Native students successfully navigate the law school application process.
  • The 7th annual workshop will assist participants in preparing competitive applications.
  • Online 90-minute sessions will be held three times a week for six weeks from June 8-July 15.

DIVERSITY IN AMERICAN POLITICS AND EDUCATION

1 p.m., March 31, 2021

  • More than 50 percent of elementary and secondary school students were racial and ethnic minorities in the 2015-16 school year, yet only 20 percent of all teachers were minorities.
  • Dr. Kenicia Wright, assistant professor at the University of Central Florida's School of Politics, Security & International Affairs, will discuss the effects of diversity in American politics and education in the United States.

DIGITAL WELL-BEING AND CITIZENSHIP

3 p.m., April 8, 2021

  • In 2019, Antioch Community High School in Illinois embarked on a journey to incorporate digital well-being and citizenship practices and spread them to staff and students.
  • This webinar will explain how ACHS approached school climate through this process and will highlight some of the activities used to promote positive human interactions through digital formats and support a sense of belonging for students and staff alike.

TEACHING U.S. HISTORY IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • Stephanie Connors, fourth grade teacher at Mount Vernon Elementary School in Maine, shares how she incorporates United States history into her elementary lessons using her American Revolution as an example.

  • Junior Achievement Rocky Mountain is offering free, one-hour live virtual workshops so students can connect with local business leaders and sharpen their problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.

TRAUMA-SKILLED SCHOOLS INSTITUTE

From 1:30-3 p.m. on April 20, 22, 27, 2021, Virtual

  • The National Dropout Prevention Center is sponsoring a Trauma-Skilled Schools Virtual Institute
  • While it is helpful to be trauma-aware and trauma-informed, it is more vital than ever that our schools also take the next step to become “Trauma-Skilled” by applying and building on their existing awareness and information.
  • Every adult in the system should have a deep understanding of trauma and its impact on student behavior and readiness to learn.
  • Registration fee is $149.00.
